    Hi

This is not about classics but if your not careful how you can be taken for a ride generally.

My son's girlfriend bough a 00 Polo in Belfast 2 weeks ago. The car drove and looked well. It also had a MOT pass cert from a week before.
She collected it and drove back to Dublin with it, half way in her words it started to struggled with hills etc.

When I saw it when she arrived back in Dublin it was running on 2 cylinders.
Long story short, when we removed the plugs cylinder 1 one plug badly fouled up as we number 2 and 3 and 4 were spot on or maybe just too clean.. Did a compression test which was fine you the problem is valves.
Got a mate to run diaganostic check and it showed 7 faults egr sensors, abs and few others!!
went back to the guy who was really nice at first selling the car and then when he was told of these issues he said "are calling my a lier and put the phone down"
Now the shocker was we found or noticed only later that day that the red warning light was PAINTED over behind the perspex on the dial itself..

Picture of plug from cylinder 1 and 2 was much the same.
    polo.jpg

    from cylinder 3 and 4

    polo1.jpg

the dial shows it clearly in this photo blown up

    polo2.jpg

So lads moral of the story is be very aware when buying!! When we asked about the light painted over the answer was " we painted it because it annoyed us"

    Jack

I agree Dades, what worries me I replaced the plugs etc and it drove fine again and to be honest sitting in the drivers seat one has to look carefully to see the light painted. I could well of made the same mistake as she did... the car was and is spotless inside and out.. drives with clean plugs spot on.
the pipes to the sensor are so worn out they collapsed and are causing problems. Onwards and upwards !!

It's a shame that happened, but people need to be far more careful when buying cars. And if someone hasn't a clue about cars, they shoudl always try to bring someone with them who at least has some basic understanding of what's good and what's bad.

    That painted dash is mad!

Shows that you should definitely bring a mechanic with you if your not well up on cars.

I'd be checking the mileage aswell! How much did it cost?

Not sure who you'd contact up North, I think trading standards would deal with this? Maybe get this moved to the main motors forum and you'd get more advice/slagging!:)

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Would this not be more suitable to the main motors forum Oki? It would get a lot more views for sure!

Common problem on those VW engines, I suspect the car is around 04,05 age. Problem is still an issue with them, but most are affected and repaired while still under warranty.

    Update

After replacing a number of items on the Polo like lamda sensor, pipes, plugs, air filter, oil filter, plugs and anything else that needed doing. The haynes manual and the ecu thinks there is an EGR sensor on the Polo which there isnt !! Fault codes show EGR issue !! there is none on the car after checking a friends Polo of same year it also doesnt have a EGR.

Anyhow after alot of trail and error we could only guess it had to be timing, as in cam timing and sure enough when we checked it, it was out!! how it didnt bend values i dont know. Then my son and friend set up the timimg as it should be and it started fine and drove fine, how ever while taking off the rocker cover we found it was welded up due to a crack, this I guess was caused by tightening down the rocker cover NOT in sequence and over tightening!!
Oh yes for got the timing bet tensioner was loose !!!

The Polo has run fine for about 12 miles and now it seems to misfire again as if running on 2 cylinders !!!

The compression is spot on and we also did a leaking test and all is spot on.

Now even more confused unless its just a build of all oil etc in the cat and the ecu is trying to compensate, i just dont know...
