The guy launched seaplanes from carriers to protect against zeppelin attacks.
    Another era altogether

with all the war and terror these days in war its almost comical to think of pretty much big balloons on bombing runs.

some differnce in a century of warfare

Sounds like he enjoyed his service anyway. In the navy, not his funeral...

If you've ever seen plastic surgery pictures of WW1 soldiers you can see the true horror of that war through their brutal disfigurements. Plus how much plastic surgery has come along too when they had different techniques of fixing their faces.

Still, he outlived everyone from that war.

Even stranger, the loss of just one or two soldiers is (quite rightly) mourned by western nations during contemporary warfare. To think how sickening it must have been for those at home when thousands were dying per day at the height of the war, is just impossible. The figures and statistics don't really mean much to us nowadays, as the majority of us can never really understand what effect half a million deaths would have on a country.

Never thought I'd be qouting Stalin but he summed up your point well.

"The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of millions is a statistic."

Probably the last war to be fought on horse back too.

Actually the last veteran is still alive - Florence Green (b. 1901) of the women's RAF who worked as an officers' mess steward. Although she didn't fight, she was still an enlisted member of the military and counts as a veteran.

btw, the last Irish veteran was Thomas Shaw (1899-2002) of Belfast who fought at Messines, Ypres, and Passchendaele.

That would be the Battle of Smithfield, 2011.

Haven't been to a League of Ireland match lately then? :pac:

It's a strange thing to think about, that that war is now as good as out of living memory. Hopefully something as ridiculous won't enter living memory again.

About 6 or 7 months ago after a power outage. Don't turn it off so don't need to turn it off.

    End of an era alright.

Still, the war finished some 93 years ago though.

    RIP CLAUDE.
