I use videomonkey on the mac. Works well and you can select the device your converting for.

Download OPlayer, lets you watch xvid and divx files with no conversion and allows you to drag and drop the files into iTunes.

Is VLC still available for the iPhone? You don't need to convert. There's CineXPlayer too. These are iPhone/iPad apps that play .avi files without needing to convert.

For my converting, I used Handbrake on OS X. You haven't said what type of computer you are using.

Another vote for Handbrake here - it has a "iPhone & iPod Touch" preset that does exactly what you need.

I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Watching content on what? You don't need to convert an AVI to watch it on a computer. But to watch it on the iPod, then yes, you have to convert it, which does take time. With Apple, it's their way (M4V, H.264) or the highway.

<grumpy>20 mins to convert is too long? You kids don't know how lucky you have it these days ... why, when I was a lad ... </grumpy>
    :p
