Check out the Fas webiste. Or even pay them a visit. They used to help and advise you in how to apply for an apprenticeship.

When i started i just went to different garages with my cv and asked if they were looking for apprentices.when i eventually got a job i had a 3 month probation period(not every garage make you do this)
after the 3 months my boss registered me with fas and it went from there really..
the rest is the same as most apprenticeships where you have 3 block releases.the 1st(phase 2)is for 20 weeks, the 2nd(phase 4) is for ten,and the 3rd(phase 6)is also ten.the rest of the time is spent in the garage.
    best of luck!;)

Drop in loads of CV's to the service managers of different garages and actually ask him, don't just give him the CV.

Keep in touch with FAS too, garages will let FAS know if they've positions from time to time too
