cost of halting sites

Local authorities and county councils report it costs them (ie the tax payer) between 6 and 7 times more to maintain halting sites than regular social housing. This is calculated on a unit/house/flat basis..

I find this mildly irritating. Why is the cost so much higher?

I find it HIGHLY irritating TBH. The amount of resources and money squandered on travellers is ludicrous.

I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the cost went into cleaning up after them. Even when they are settled they can't keep their own patch clean. You should see the state of some of the houses in Tuam, disgraceful.

You know how it goes with councils and governments. Millions are spent before anyone even lifts a finger

I hate halting sites as much as the next guy, but I say they could be spending these millions to hire in people to make sure the halting site complies to obscure rules and regulations they made themselves, overpriced insurance and other things that aren't absolutely necessary so they can come along at a later date to say halting sites costs too much

everyone knows its costs less to maintain an empty field in the middle of nowhere than an estate full of scumbags

Apparently not. The guy on the telly said it was simply on cleaning, waste collection and repairs.

this thing of giving them places to live, houses to trash, letting them keep horses where ever the F* they want, in entirely unsuitable places mostly, is such bull. I would like a field for my horse and a free house or site but you think if i gave up work in the morning i would get one.. some chance. They ought to be turfed out if they cant pick up a bit of rubbish or maintain their abode in some halfway decent state

Yes they do. I have family of them living a few houses down and behind me who are part of the social housing thing. Kind of galling as most of the people living here are paying mortgages. The house beside them is unsold 5 years after it was built even though it's had the price dropped a few times and all the other houses are sold around it.

They do keep themselves to themselves for the most part but the house is in an utterly terrible state. Load of rubbish in the back garden and a couple of clapped out vans in the driveway for nearly 2 years. I'd say the inside is horrendous.

Funnily enough the last construction project I was employed in was a development of travellers accommodation in west dublin, these things were practically indestructable the amount of over design in them was mental, the 'occupants' used to come down every couple and complain that the houses were not big enough, there was no range in them (cos they did not have a chimney), they were too far from town (despite being closer to finglas/blanch than the illegal site they lived in), the best one was when they wanted there own private access road onto the M50 and could not believe they did not get one !! In fairness the traveller liaison guy from the council was fed up of them too but not would refuse them on anything, they had them over a barrell and knew it too. the stories i could tell about the 'lads'

That seems to be it actually, a lot(not all) don't. Why should they? They have someone to clean up after them and foot the bill and if the Council don't they can claim discrimination.

They do whatever they like and have absolutely no respect for the area around them. I saw in the paper today a child was awarded €20,000 for falling on glass beside the halting site where he lives...no prizes for guessing who dumped the glass there in the first place.

I saw a great documentary at Christmas about a family of traveller's living out in Ballymun. The mother had died and the father had turned to the drink, the children hardly ever went to school, could barely read and ended up on the run from the Gardaí on a show jumping horse that they stole, shocking stuff.

Ah travellers, living life on the open road, wind in their hair because the winscreen of their hiace has a hole in it. No work, no responsibilities, just freedom man, glorious freedom. Oh to be one of them, if only for a day.

Travellers do get offered free bloody houses! A poxy new mini-estate built for them there last year just outside Galway on the Tuam Road. And they managed to fit their caravans in front of the houses, God knows what the houses are used for. Ya should see them, always in the shop I work in, crooked from incest and beggin' for copper wire. God I hate them.

Just as a matter of clarification.
You were not banned from this forum at all. However using this forum to bitch about your banning is not OK. And it was clearly pointed out to you that that is not why you were banned.
