Moving to Europe, thinking of bringing car

Looking quite likely that I'll be moving to Denmark in the next couple of months for a year. Was thinking of filling the car up and bringing it with me.

There is a ferry link from England, and amn't really concerned about the long drive. However I'm not sure of the issues surrouding taking a car to europe.

Obviously my insurance company would need to be informed and may not agree to cover.

If only going for a year would I have to register the vehicle over there.

    Also, what about road tax?

Anyone have any advice or previous experience in bringing a car to europe for an extended period?

    Thanks in advance

I don't have any experience but I had a quick look on google

    https://www.workindenmark.dk/Find+information/Til+arbejdstagere/Livet+i+Danmark/Transport/Bil+i+Danmark.aspx
A registration fee must be paid for new and used cars brought into Denmark. The registration fee typically comprises 60-63 percent of the sale price of a similar car in Denmark.

Theres quite a few websites I found quite easily on importing a car there, however if the above quote is right, if your only going for a year you might be better selling it/parking it up here. As far as I can tell if your going to get permanent residency(ie live/work there) you'll need to register it, get it plated up and get local roadtax. You can keep your current license however.

I'm pretty sure they have a 105% vrt in denmark, maybe the same exemptions apply for immigrants as here?
They also have emissions based road tax I think.

    Thanks for the replies guys,

yeah the price of cars in Denmark is crazy, thats why I was hoping to bring one with me. Does anyone know what is the longest period I could bring a car over for without changing the plates? Obviousy over here there are loads of european registered cars on the roads, but what is the legal requirement?

We're in Europe already. Start off by finding out whether immigrants are VRT exempt. If so (and i'd imagine they are), find out how long you have to have owned the car before the move. A LHD car would be vastly preferable, and could be sold there, perhaps even at a profit, before you return. If there's no time for that then i'm sure you can bring your own car, register it there, and reregister it here on your return.

Generally in every country there would be a time limit which you can drive a foreign registered car.
Usually it's somthing like a year, half year, or 3 months.

Very often, countries which don't have registration tax and expensive road tax, don't really bother, and no one really checks it (like Germany, Poland, France, etc).
In other countries it's much more strict (like in Ireland).

To be sure about Denmark, the best what you can do is to ask on some Danish discussion forums.

Considering your insurance company no matter if you inform them or not, and no matter how long you are going for, they are obliged to provide you with unlimited third party cover, which makes you road legal there. Any extra (fire, theft, accidental damage, etc) will be probably limited to month or 3, and you might need to pay extra for any longer period if they will be happy to provide (in many cases they won't).

You won't have to any VRT as you already own the car. It's the same as someone from the UK moving to Eire, or Polish people moving here. You have to prove you lived in the country for a certain period of which that car was registered .
