Interview for accountancy practice

I have an interview comig up at the end of the week for a medium sized accountancy firm in Dublin City Centre.

I am currently working in a firm outside of county Dublin. I have not had a pay increase since I started there as a trainee over three years ago.

I was wondering if the interviewer will ask or is allowed to ask anything regarding my current salary as I am afraid if they realise how low it is and if I get offered the position they may drop what they were going to offer.

I realise I cannot lie to them and give them an increased figure as theywill know when I had in my P45 on commencing employment.

Also does anyone have any ideas the type of questions I may be asked?

    Thanks

    hi accounts1

you do not have to give your prospective employer your P45 in the first place, you can send it to the revenue and ask them to send out a amended tax credit form.

i wouldnt lie to any prospective employer about your salary as you be a accountant in time and it doesnt look good.

as for interview questions well the basic ones would be

why are you leaving ?, what experience have you got ? ie accounts to trial balance or final stage, sole traders, limited companies etc have you any special knowledge like credit unions, solictors, auctioneers, or companies limited by guarantee. also what accounts packages are you familar with like sage accounts production, relate accounts production etc. what value can you being to us ?

hope this helps and good luck in your job prospects

Generally an interviewer will ask "what are your salary expectations"

Its not a question I would be expected to ask nor one I would think to ask were I interviewing a candidate.
They might ask about salary expectations so have a think about what you see as a fair salary for the position

You could mention the salary and if it is extremly low let them know it is one of the reasons you are considering moving on. They will probably want to know why you are moving, remember not to say anything bad about your current employer at any interview

    Good luck

    Hi Accounts1,

    Hope your interview went well.:)
Ive also been working in an accountancy firm for 3 years and my pay has only gone up slightly two years ago. Serously considering looking for work elsewhere. Just wondering if you told your current employers that you were looking for work elsewhere or did you keep it on the low low. Il be getting my ACCA qualification at the end of June and im thinking about sending around my CV after that.

The interview went fantastic and I was offered the position, I'm delighted. The salary I was offered is an 80% increase on my current salary, I do enjoy my current job but the salary is so low it's almost offensive and I just had enough. I'm thinking I should of started to look for somewhere new sooner.

I was in fact asked about my current salary in the interview, i tried to make it sound a bit better by exagarating the study leave entitlements!

You should try for something new if you think you are being unfairly underpaid.
