    Quick query folks.
Microsoft Security Essentials.... does it have a firewall inbuilt, or do I need to run a separate firewall?

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/mse.aspx

It has what they call "real-time protection", which you can toggle on or off, but if that is the firewall I wish they would just say that.
I've been running zonealarms firewall alongside it just until I get this query cleared up

    No it doesn't have a firewall. It's anti-virus only

Windows firewall is a seperate application

    stick with zone alarm!
