    Hi all
I have an interview for an accounts position tomorrow and am unsure as to what to wear. Do i wear the full suit or would smart trousers, blouse and cardi/jumper be ok? Havent really had proper interview ever so quite nervous and dont really want the extra discomfort of the suit attire!!

Probably wrong place for this thread but.... work and jobs thread here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=10

Smart trousers and a blouse are normally enough for a lady imo.

Put it this way.... Ive never heard of someone not getting a job for being overdressed.
    Goodluck.

Moved from N&F, unless Fashion and Appearance is more appropriate, but I'm thinking the job aspect takes precedence.

I agree, smart trousers and blouse normally enough.
Also small amount of make up gives a good impression

That is always assuming you are female.
    If not (gulp) apologies

If that's what you'd wear in an office where men have to wear a suit, then I would say that's fine.

Plain clothes will do. Dark tailored trousers, white t-shirt or blouse and a matching cardi. I usually throw on a scarf as well if the t-shirt is high-necked.

Make sure your make-up is light, and don't use a heavy perfume.

IMHO, do not EVER wear a cardi to an office-job interview. They make you look sloppy and slack.

In general, you want to be just a tiny bit better dressed than the person who's interviewing you. So for an accounts job, you'll be interviewed probably by an accounts TL or manager, who would be expected to wear a suit when they're dressed up. So you should wear one too.

I don't agree with this. Why do they make you look 'sloppy and slack'??

It depends on what you team it with doesn't it? If you wear a suitable matching cardigan and keep the look plain, with well-cut, classic (NOT Dunnes or Primark!) trousers or skirts then it can look sleek and professional. In any case, not many people (younger people) own suits these days, especially when starting out in their careers.

I soon learnt this going to interviews. In EVERY case, I've been interviewed by people who did not wear suits. In one case, I was interviewed by a pleasant young man who wore a fisherman's jumper and jeans. There I was all done up like a dog's dinner in s suit and sharp shirt, and feeling like a prawn...

I think interviewers can even be intimidated by the clothes you wear. I'm talking about female interviewers here. The men don't particularly care IMO as long are you're neat and tidy. No casual shirts/jeans, that sort of thing.

I'm an accountant and have interviewed lots of potential underlings in my time :D My advice is wear a suit if possible, as we assumed you are a lady, at the very least wear smart trousers and a smart blouse and smart shoes.
I would avoid a cardigan unless it looks work smart, maybe it's worth a little light stalking, take a gander past the office at chucking out time to see how smartly dressed the staff normally are and go in a touch smarter than them

Thanks everyone! Went went the trousers, blouse and cardi, and as it turned out, looked overdressed compared to the interviewer!!

Funny.I'd always wear a suit to an interview, no matter what (I'm a girl!). I was interviewed by 2 guys in jeans last week. Don't care....they have a job there, I don't. As far as I'm concerned, what I wear reflects on me and doesn't matter a damn when compared to what my interviewers wear. If I'm over-dressed, then I'll just put up with that for the 30-45 mins or so of an interview, if it gives a better impression.

    My 2 cents!!!

I am a company owner with a number of staff and I've interviewed over 100 people over the past number of years. Sometimes Im in a suit and sometimes a little less formal depending on meetings that day. I would always advise dressing formally and smart for an interview, it gives a good impression and makes you look interested.
I have left the room thinking that that person just couldnt be bothered, if they are informally dressed and straight away it started them on the back foot. Its easy to look well and yes frst impression do very much count.
