Working with disk image

Just need a little help understanding something. I have a bootable disk image of my hard drive and have booted to it to see that it works (just opened it up to see, didn't use anything. I did open itunes though, and it started downloading all these podcasts I subscribed too, I freaked out :o thinking that it was gonna screw up something and stopped the downloads).
I saw a reference by someone (here, possibly) saying that they bring their 'home computer' to their workplace on their ext HD.
From my understanding, I essentially have my 'home computer' on my ext. HD, and therefore can plug it into anybody else's mac and boot from it.
So as an example, I can visit my friend with my ext. HD and plug into his mac, boot my drive, listen to my itunes collection, play my games, use my apps, open up and continue working on a Word /Pages project.....etc, etc. and then close it down and head away home. That's possible??
I presume that any changes/updates will just be on this disk. Can I then update my Mac's internal drive with any changes when I get back to it?
Or is it a case of putting documents into dropbox to get the on my mac as well. I use superduper.
Does anybody here do this kind of thing? Any particularly cool uses for having your image with you? Can it save you any hassle?

You can't boot from a disk image, so I assume you mean that you have an exact copy of your startup disk on an external drive, yeah?

Anyway I've never heard of anyone doing this. Sounds a bit bizarre to me. If you want to carry your computer around with you, get a laptop. Otherwise just use Dropbox, a USB stick or a notebook drive with the files that you need.

Sorry, maybe clone is the word? i plug in that drive, start up and hold option to select ext hd. My macbook then boots from this and it presents me with the desktop and my files etc as it was the day I created the clone/copy/image (whatever it's calles). So if the Internal drive died I can just use this one to keep me going. Hope that makes some more sense. Was sure some guy said he would essentially run his machine on someone else's hardware. I could have it completely ar5e about face too!

Yeah, clone is the word. What you described is correct - you could bring it to another Mac and boot off it - I just don't see much need for doing this except in unusual circumstances. However, it's certainly handy to have in case your hard disk fails.
