Which club will Ashley Young be playing for next season?

Speculation about Ashley Young's future is nothing new, but with only 12 months left on his contract it looks like his relativity successful tenure with Aston Villa will be coming to an end this summer.

So which club do you think he'll be playing for next season and how around how much do you think he will go for?

I personally think he will move to Man Utd for around £18/20m, even though as a Villa fan I'll be sorry to see the back of him.

I don't think you will see anybody spend that sort of money on a player with only a year left on his contract.

For that money i think you could do a lot better. Plus i'm not sure where he'd fit in the united set up as i doubt he wants to warm a bench.

Edit: I think he'd do well at liverpool......though i really dont want that to happen

I don't know if anyone on that list actually needs him do they? Also I don't think anyone would pay over 12m for someone with just one year left on their contract, especially when his performances of late haven't been great.

10M - 12M will be his price, still too much.

Spurs if Bale goes. Villa if not.

The rumours going around is that £15m would be a realistic price tag, but I'm hoping that Man City or Chelsea try to outbid each other, whilst trying to get one over Man Utd and Liverpool respectively, resulting in Villa make a nice tidy profit.

There's a bit of a rumour doing the rounds that he has agreed personal terms (through third parties, of course!) with Liverpool and that they are the same terms that were offered to him in January. I presume Man Utd or perhaps others could match those in due course, so it would be down to clubs agreeing a fee and him deciding where he wants to go.

I have a feeling he'll go to Liverpool for about £15m. Given his contract situation I wouldn't think he's worth more than £12m but it looks like there will be a battle for his signature. Think he could do well under Kenny.

liverpool need a left sided player for sure

wouldnt be surprised to see him go to city though

nobody only city would pay £15m for a guy with one year left on his contract

Liverpool always need a left-sided player, but it's surely high time they got a good one instead of spending 10-15 million almost every season for someone mediocre.

His price is inflated due to nationality. Gary Cahill syndrome as I call it.

I'd like to see him at Arsenal, I think he'd be an asset to us.

I've read he wants to move south, so doubt it'll be United or Liverpool if so.

If Wenger decides to spend some money this Summer he could end up at Arsenal, especially if Fabregas or Nasri go.

And then there's Chelsea who may well be looking to revitalise their midfield.

I'm sure 'arry re'ons he's t'riffic 'n all, and Spurs could do a deal with Krancjar going the other way - especially if he's still available on August 31st at 11:58pm.

Yeah he's a London lad so a move south wouldn't surprise me and 'Arry is a huge admirer and he even bid (rumoured to be around the £18m mark) for him last August before their Champions League campaign.

I can't picture him at Arsenal and doubt Wenger would touch him for anything over £10m but Chelsea could be a real possibility as they might be looking to do slight reshuffle during the summer.

The clever money would be on Man Utd & Liverpool snapping him up though, but Man City have a habit of paying silly money for Villa players so I'd more then welcome a bid from them, I'd even take a straight swap for James Milner! :p

20m? I'd be well pissed off if Liverpool paid that for him. 12m is about max I'd go. Don't see chelsea or City being interested either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

I reckon he'll be at Liverpool, given Comolli & Dalglish's tendency to buy young English talent, their need for a pace and versatility in attack, and FSG's policy of looking for value (last year of contract means he'll go for less than he's otherwise worth).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,535 ✭✭✭Raekwon

I'm surprised at the amount of people that think he will still be at Villa next season.

His recent poor performances and sulky on field antics suggest that his mind is on bigger and better things and this is emphasized when he can suddenly turn on the style in an England shirt with apparent ease.

Plus I'm sure Randy Lerner would hate to see his prized asset walk out the door without seeing a substantial financial return.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

Dont see him coming to us ( Chelsea )

We've been tipped to get Alexis Sanchez so I'd prefer him over Young, at the moment its hard to tell what Chelsea will do next year with regrads formation and players though.

If Villa want to do a swap we can give 8 million and Kalou, please someone take Kalou off us........please??? :pac:

Houlliers health problems could play a huge part in it.

If - as expected - Houllier does NOT return to work at Villa, a high profile manager could make a big signing or two before Young has a chance to leave.

If Rafa were to come in for example? Impress him and make a couple of big signings???

For less than 15m I'd be happy to see Young at Liverpool.

He's a proven Premiership wide player (which we've need for a while, even more so with Carroll at the club), with a great ability at crossing set pieces. WIth Carroll in the team Young would be a great asset. We'd be a massive threat from set pieces and with Suarez and Young running at defenders they would be left in a quandry about whether to commit to a tackle and risk giving away a dangerous set piece.

I think he'd be a success. He's not World Class but he'd be a big improvement on what we have, and a reliable effective buy for the club. He'd be similar to what United have with Valencia (who I think is underrated by many).

I don't see United going for him as they have 2 quality wide players already

    Suarez Carroll Young

This should = a lot of goals. With Kuyt able to cover all these positions, or play in some of the tougher away matches perhaps. Or play both in a 4-4-2.

Young would offer a different option anyway and would not be a risk imo

Err, Comolli snapped up almost every single emerging British talent while at Spurs. And Dalglish dealt mostly in British players at Liverpool and Blackburn too, albeit 20 years ago.

Really? Haven't seen much of Villa lately so this is maybe based on memories of lots of goals scored by the likes of Laursen and Dunne, getting on the end of dangerous Young balls...

Always thought he whipped in a quality set-piece that was very difficult for defence/goalkeeper to deal with. Has he lost this quality in recent years or was it never there in your opinion?

Would you and other Villa fans think this is because maybe his head and his heart aren't in it for ya anymore?

nah hes been at it for the last 2 years or so

not sure what happened but his delivery is awful. sure he gets assists, but the number of decent crossing chances he wastes is insane. his corners and free kicks alone must amount to 10-15 complete balls ups every game.

he needs to move to improve, doesnt matter where he goes, but he's in the comfort zone at villa

No doubting he'd love a move to the team he supports - The Gunners

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,710 ✭✭✭✭Paully D

He's a very overrated player IMO. Performs once every 5 games and thinks he's better than he is. The definition of a luxury player.

If anyone spends over £8m on him they'll have definitely overspent and I actually think Villa will be better off without having to accommodate him in the team, because as an outsider looking in it seems they're letting him do what he likes in the hope he'll sign a new contract.

I feel Fergie will be clever enough not to touch him. It could be either Liverpool, Manchester City or Spurs where he ends up IMO. He seems the type that would love a move to London for anything other than footballing reasons so I'll vote Spurs.

He's certainly not a luxury player, he has some of the highest work rate and ground covered for Villa if not the league. I cannot find the article mentioning it ATM.

He's not playing as he was in the past seasons but he is a very good pro.

That's very much the wrong impression there. I don't know where you would get that from.

    spot on

theres really not that much to give out about in terms of work rate or application from ash. he always puts the effort in

what i dont like about him is his petulance, his inconsistency, his inability to cross a ball without sending it about 20 yards long and that stupid episode with him playing in a position he was brutal in and making him captain because the club were pandering to him in the hope he'd sign a new contract

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,373 ✭✭✭Dr Galen

Cheers Hlix, admittedly I haven't seen much of Villa recently. When I have, he's looked alright, will have to watch out for his delivery. He looks a different player though in an England shirt though.

Do you both think he would be a fit for Liverpool then? There has been debate about over on the superthread, but interested to know what you might think

as i say, he'll probably be a star wherever he goes coz he'll have to up his game if he wants to actually get on the pitch. whether its liverpool, real madrid or scunthorpe i think whoever gets him will see a lot more of him than hes been showing at villa lately.

conversely i think villa will be a much better team without him. its just one of those strange ones where a move is in everyone's best interest i think

Yeah that's exactly what I said earlier in this thread, IMO he has big fish in small pond syndrome and needs a move before he stagnates any further at Villa. If he moves to a club that will challenge for honours then we will most likely see his hunger return and his consistency will improve, probably similar to the performance he puts in for England on a regular basis.

Despite the strong links to United, I think Liverpool is the better option for him. We have two great players on the wing and a guy who will play all the big games. Liverpool need a left winger. Although, he hasn't been that great lately I'm sure someone will make a bid for him. Perhaps his head is elsewhere.

I personally think he should go to Liverpool. If he signs for United, he will spend extended periods on the bench. If he goes to Liverpool, he will be a starter week in week out.
Personally, as a United fan, I have no objection with him coming to United, I do rate him, just not as much as Nani or Valencia.

A bit of a spanner in the works here as Watford apparently have a sell-on clause and would be entitled to 15% of Young's future transfer fee if it's more then the £9.75m that Villa paid them for him back in 2007.

So say if Villa sell him for £15m, Watford would get £2.25m of that fee leaving Villa with £12.75m.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,661 ✭✭✭✭Helix

would youngs last contract not have plugged that like cahills last bolton deal did for our 25% sell on?

tbh id be more worried if Albrighton wanted out now that lad can cross a ball. I can see him at Liverpool most likely (the way things stand atm), though people seemed to think him to United was as good as done at some stage. Chelsea, Spurs and City would be outside bets if they have a squad shuffle in the summer.

Id say he will go for 13m+ tbh. I know it was City but thats what Villa got for Barry with 1 year left on his contract and id imagine that Young would be a much more marketable asset at this stage in his career.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,661 ✭✭✭✭Helix

barry left on the back of his best seasons ever for us, and went to many city though, so even his £12m was a touch inflated

I dont expect there to be much in the difference but yeah as i noted that wasCity so take it with a pinch of salt if you wish but id imagine Youngs worth would still be atleast equivalent what with his being younger and more attacking (attackers almost always go for more). So 13m to me sounds realistic but also a good price to get for him as far as Villa are concerned. If it was less than 12 like some are suggesting id imagine a lot more clubs would be interested. Even Wenger spends that kinda money on players these days.

Villa will need to get the finger out ASAP.

At the right price he'd be a great addition at Liverpool.
