Sheared Bolt

    Hey folks,

I was doing some work to my car (a 03 alfa 147, 1.6) over the weekend which involved seperating the front cat from the manifold........easy right! Well, in the process I managed to shear one of the securing bolts! Tried the brute force method but no joy.

Think I am out of my depth here. Anyone got any recommendations of who/where in Dublin to bring it to to get repaired?

Who would have known one bolt could cause so much hassles!!!

    Thanks for your help,

    John

Have you got a picture of how its damaged? where did the bolt break? Is the remaining part of the bolt sticking out of the manifold?

Worst case scenario just take off the manifold and remove the bolt yourself. Or if you've no luck removing the bolt, bring it to a machine shop and they'll get the bolt out in a few mins.

    Thanks DublinDilbert,

It's more like a stud fixed to the flange of the plate connecting the cat to the manifold. Suppose I could drop the cat and hammer/drill out the remaining stud and replace with a M8 bolt and nut?

Was trying to take the lazy way out and just get someone to fix it

I'd imagine it's either a stud that's threaded into the manifold or a bolt with a clinch type head on it (and the manifold is not treadled). If you can see the rear of the stud/bolt you should be able to identify what type it is. If its a clinch type and not threaded into the manifold it might just tap out and you can replace it with a bolt.

If its threaded into the manifold there's a few things to try (depending on where the stud broke):-
    1) twist it out with a vice grips
    2) try a stud extractor
    3) thread on a nut then put a little weld on it, then turn the whole lot out
    4) drill a hole up the centre of it and try an easy out in it
    5) drill the whole stud out and replace with a nut + bolt + copper washers.
