Hi Lads + Lassies, I started playing about 18 months ago. Feel like i've hit a bit of a plateau with regards to improving my game. I've just been playing with the same 5 mates consistently so think i may need a bit of competitive golf to push on. Obviously to play in open days etc, you need to become a member of a club and GUI. I was wondering if anybody was aware of any clubs offering good distance membership deals. I would be literally only joing to get an official handicap so it doesn't need to be anywhere top notch. I'm based in south west Dublin. Cheers in advance

Due to one thing after another, trouble with my jeep, communion & yet another injury at the start of the long evenings means I haven't renewed my membership this year. Can you move to another club with distance membership and then after a year or so go back to your home club?

I don't mean to be mean but can't justify it this year at the moment and I don't want to mess around my club, should I just take a year out & pay green fee's?

You can transfer your handicap once it's within 6 month since you were last a member. If it goes more than 6 months then you'd have to submit 3 cards to get a new handicap because your old one is considered lapsed.

Strange that they have nothing about membership on their website. Do you know for sure that they are doing distance membership for approx €120?. Does this entitle you to play in their regular member comps?. Thinking I could join somewhere like Callan, go down early stay 1 night and get 2 games in.

    Thats a farce if true.
So if a 2 handicapper gives up his membership he has to start all over again ,after 6 months.Ridiculous.

    It is true.
He should submit his 3 cards along with further relevant information (e.g. I was a 2 handicapper in 2008 but I let my handicap lapse yada yada). The 3 cards and the info would be used to decide a "new" handicap.

Flip side of what you suggest is that someone could hold an 18 handicap, let membership lapse for a year, spend the year practicing and getting lessons... you wouldn't want them to resume at 18 if their 'new' ability now warranted single figures?

Callan is great value for that price. A lot of courses around here do cheap distance membership Clonmel, Slievenamon, Templemore but Callan is by far the best course at that price well worth a look.

If you were willing to spend a little more (300e) my home course Rathdowney Co.Laois is well worth a look. Extreemly good course in immaculate condition. Brought a few family members from Dublin out a few weeks ago and when I told them the price of membership their jaws hit the ground. Full membership 550e. Apparently for the membership the course is of an extreemly high standard.

Didn't know too much about sub's and only really started playing away at the end of last year and I must say I didn't appreciate what I had until I copped the state of some of the other local tracks.

I know it's not distance membership (for you), but Sillogue standard membership is €330. Lowest I'm aware of in the Dublin area.

Bellewstown Golf Club (Co.Meath) offer associate membership for €270. That price would be from January - December so with it being May now you could ask for a reduced fee.

Highfield near Edenderry are offering NEW members FULL membership for €395. This gives you full playing rights and no green fees. There are a lot of Dublin members in the club at present. I think this is great value.
