Whether it’s forgetting to wax or having a ‘fat’ day, leggings hide all manner of sins.
But the army of women who rely on them could be in for a nasty shock now that it’s time to peel them off for summer.
Experts have warned that leggings can make the muscles ‘lazy’ and can result in flabby stomachs and wobbly legs.
The claim will alarm thousands for whom leggings have become a wardrobe staple.
Physiotherapist Sammy Margo said: ‘Leggings feel good and look great and I am as addicted to them as anyone, but there is a downside.
‘They hold in and support the quadriceps (thigh muscles), buttocks and core muscles in your tummy, and do the job the muscles are supposed to do.
‘As a result, the muscles are allowed to relax and switch off, so when we reveal our bodies for the first time as summer approaches, they are not as svelte or firm as they otherwise would be.’
The problem is further exacerbated because wearers’ bare legs and midriffs are ‘out of sight, out of mind’, so women are less inclined to take steps to tone up during the winter months.
Mrs Margo said: ‘Leggings hide the bits of our bodies we don’t like, such as the cellulite on our legs or our “muffin top”, so we are able to ignore the problem and we are less motivated to exercise these parts.’
Celebrity advocates of leggings include Michelle Obama, Gwyneth Paltrow, Katy Perry and Victoria Beckham, who even launched her own designer range.
Lycra leggings made a fashion comeback in 2006 and have remained popular ever since.
They are now available in virtually every style and colour, including wet-look, denim, animal print and neon.
But perhaps today’s news marks the beginning of the end for this particular fashion fad.
The good news is that women can apparently regain the strength in the muscles that have been made lethargic by their leggings through a few simple, daily exercises.
They include walking with ankle weights, clenching and releasing the stomach and buttocks throughout the day – and even using a piece of string to aid core exercises.

    What does you think??
I'm not sure if this is the appropriate forum to post this in so I reposted it in diet and fitness too.

Don't believe a word fo it tbh - surely it would only have any effect if you wore them 24/7?

I'm not sure but I know one thing for sure is that I have been wearing them most of winter and even now.

I remember an article somewhere which measured the nasty bacteria in the trouser area of ladies (sorry, trying to find a delicate way of wording it...) and similar to this, found that leggings, skinny jeans etc helped the bacteria grow way more than standard or loose fit trousers.

I hate leggings, I think most people look stupid in them, tbh, so if this helps kill the trend, yay! ;)

daily mail = load of made up rubbish with a few paid 'scientists' behind it in order to get people to buy paper/click through to their website. Surely high denier tights would be even more supportive than leggings and yet you don't see people going round with deformed flobby legs from years of wearing them

The very fact this article is from the Daily Mail says it all...why do people even bother to read it???

Also, how tight would the leggings have to be!

That is absolutely laughable. Seriously. Hold in your muscles? What does that even mean? Just no. Completely ridiculous. You get a saggy belly from having a baby, eating too much, not moving enough etc. Not from wearing leggings and having your "muscles supported".

What about people who need DVT tights/socks or something similar? Currently, I have a relation who is 8 months pregnant and she was told not to replace her support socks with leggings because they don't do the same job at all. And does the same apply to standard tights? I think not. The Daily Mail isn't the most reliable source on these issues anyway!

zoegh already mentioned the whole microbe issue... thrush being the one that comes to mind. Apparently, thongs are the worst thing for this and I cannot imagine wearing tight leggings every day would be very good either. All in moderation!

Ha! I think girls wish they held them in but it is so not the case. Leggings hide nothing and half the people who wear them shouldn't. Especially not as straight up trousers! I think the problem is these girls are flabby before they put them on. It shows!

Leggings are bad for you if worn with short tops. Fact.
