Need a bit of help choosing a car everyone, Have a Petrol saloon car at moment but need to buy a car/jeep suitable for a dirty smelly dog in the back! so i'm thinking diesel (like everyone else at the mo) for economy and nees to ne a hatch to have room for a dog in back and I only drive at weekends and nearly always motorway driving so want cruise control! 05 or 06 and about 8K to spend, second hand golf TDI is what I have been looking at but would I be mad to get a jeep, Freelander/Rav 4 etc.:confused::confused:

You'd be mad to get a freelander anyways........pure 4x4 scrap on wheels.
My suggestion - Mondeo 2.0tdci hatch in Ghia spec(or even better ghia x) with cruise etc.
A dog guard for the back is just £45 - job done.

If fuel economy is a concern then a hatch or estate would be best. You could divide up the estate load area to keep dog and luggage separate.

Focus estate, octavia/golf estate, mondeo, vectra,

Avensis won't have cruise unless its an import.

If you're particularly concerned about economy, then a good diesel estate would be preferable to a jeep. As i've said before most 4x4s have the aerodynamics of a brick, are pretty damn heavy and have transmissions that take up quite a bit of power and fuel just to run. I still love them, but i wouldn't expect to get the same fuel economy as a good diesel car. Driven carefully, and kept well maintained they're not as bad as you may think, but if economy is a particular issue for you then get a car.

thanks for the replies helps to hear a third party view on things estate sounds like a good proposition especially that i can corner off one section for dog only! economy wouldn't be a deal breaker as i only drive long trips on motorways one or two days a week

Ebay has plenty of dog guards on there for you to choose, good value too.

Maybe an Audi A4 or A6 avant?
