iPhone 3G wifi problem?

    Hey guys,

Long story short, I'm giving my other half my old iPhone 3G while she is away in England for the next few days so we can keep in contact for free through viber/whatsapp but I've a problem. I updated the phone this morning to 4.2.1 and now it can't find any wifi networks and there is defiantly some in range as my iPhone 4 can find them no problem.

After a search, I know this seems to be a big problem with the 3G but is there any definitive fixes out there? The thoughts of her having to use the 3G network abroad when she could be using wifi are killing me. :(

    Cheers.

EDIT: Read up some more on this and tried all the recommendations.. reset network settings/ reset all settings / restore the whole phone to factory settings. NONE of the above worked. Am I doomed? Also another query, Do I need to have credit in the phone to access the app store or iTunes store?
