    Where have they all gone?

I remember my neighbour had a nice 'sporty' looking silver one years ago and I always said I'd like one. Not seen one in decent condition for a long time either for sale or on the road.

Were they any good back in the day?

Volvoman now is your time to enlighten me :)

they were and still are great, they're by no means sporty though, but very tough and very solid. Nice and re-assuring to drive. There are still quite a few available in the uk relatively cheap.

I just hadn't seen a genuine Irish one for a while now that was in decent condition.

I can't remember the exact model the guy had, I think it was GLT but it looked the part as fas as one could and it was that way from new so I assume it was a factory job. Another had a diesel 760 which was nice as well. I just was thinking about them at work this evening and realised how long it had been since I saw one in the wild

    a friend of mine bought a 1991 240 estate 3 years ago
from a local(ish) undertaker it's registered as a hearse he only pays €88 a year for tax :D
with only 100k miles on the clock (122k now)
he swaps it every week with his 89 merc c200 (201k miles)
to keep both them ticking rather then leaving one idle

but it really is a beautiful car to drive the steering is amazingly light and suspiciously good on petrol :D

All the old RWD volvos were great, it's just the typical irish mentality to maintenance that has thinned them out, they were also expensive at the time, and you know how we love to buy our cheap bog standard spec cars in this country.

when i said they're not sporty by the way i just meant they're not exactly a sporty drive, but they're a nice drive and the glt was a nicely specced model in it's day

An Uncle of mine had a 245 estate years ago, he painted the rear side windows and taxed it as a commercial.
He used to say that if you could put Croagh Patrick into a trailer the Volvo would tow it. :D

oops didn't look at it properly i've too many tabs open
    i meant this one !!!
    obviously not a pristine example :D and i just realised it's a 340 :o
    View2-5658697.jpeg

i had one of those 240s briefly i got it for free but needed new
    brakepads and discs and
    new exhaust
    new wheels and tyres
new rear window (massive crack in it
    new manifold (i think)
and a few more bits i just couldn't afford it at the time

i found a pic of my mates one
we had 12 palletts in the back and 11 i think in the trailer :D

One of the lads down here has a low miles '77 244 saloon commemorating Volvos 50th anniversary in 1977. These were a limited edition of both the 244 and 264 model, called the Jubilee. These cars had silver metallic paintwork with special black and gold decor badging and moldings and blue velour/plush seats. A really well finished car for the era. Supposedly there was only 50 cars for each country.

Also apparently you had to be a Volvo customer for years and have owned at least three previous Volvos to be allowed to buy one, but im not sure of the truth of this. Practical Classics magazine has been known to tell lies before!

Much more info on the series here

A share of them died banger racing I'd say.

How about the 2 door? Bet there's not too many of them around.

I cannot remember ever seeing a two door other than the 262.

    Was it ever sold here?

A mate of mine has one (88D) that is in fairly frequent use. A fantastic spec for back then, heated leather seats, all electric windows. Steering isn't so hot though, it's a bit of a barge, but it's like driving a tank; any modern car with its crumple zones would come off much the worse for hitting one of those babies :)

Volvo 244's had their time on our roads like all cars. The last examples rolled off the production line nearly two decades ago remember. They were also thirsty beasts in their day and our unfair road tax system which makes nearly all big old cars difficult to justify running can't have helped.

My uncle had an '88 244 GL in silver since it was nearly new and only scrapped it about three years ago. For around the first two years of its life it belonged to the Nigerian embassy here in Ireland. There is also an identical '89 example that still lives around Loughlinstown/Cabinteely area and looked in great order the last time I saw it.

I think the main problem with these was rust to be honest. They weren't bad by the standard of similar cars of their day, it's just they do rust as they get older, and sometimes it can get bad.

Ive seen a few original irish Volvo 240s in the last few months so there are still around, in working order. One was a 93 estate, one of the last made. As someone mentioned the 262 and 242, there was also a unique 143. Volvo made it as a prototype and it was recently in Holland. It had 3 doors, one on the passenger side and two on the driver side......

Wow, that's lovely! An early 80's 244 by the looks of it.

There's a guy on the UK Volvo forums who's building a project out of an example that is identical to yours. He's putting a high pressure turbo engine into it from a 940.

Correct! She's mid- 1980, just turned 81k miles, bar a sticking front caliper, she's on the button.

This Saloon is parking on the same street for last four years (Turners Cross area, Cork - I'd say locals will recognize the street straight away). I had a chat with the owner about three years ago and he is obviously still driving the car every day until today.

I took this picture about a year ago in Cork (Blackpool shopping centre)

    Image049.jpg

And few week ago I saw (again in Cork) another silver 240 in very nice condition (year was 1990) driven by older couple. It's really nice to see that these cars are still alive.

Great to see those photos, really is.

The car my relative had was identical to the second one above.

    Fantastic stuff.

That green 144 must be one of the oldest surviving Irish Volvo's in the country (provided the registration's original).

If you take into account the 144/145, the 200 Series had a production run from 1966-1993.
