I wouldn't have said so. Were you together a long time? Was the break up bitter and acrimonious or more amicable? Would you be civil if you met in the street? Most importantly, would you find it weird if your ex sent you a message of that kind?

If it was a relatively peaceful break up I don't see anything wrong with sending a message. You'd be the best person to judge how they'll take it, but in the end even if they don't enjoy receiving it, they can simply ignore it completely.

Personally I wouldnt, not to an ex. Wouldnt see much point. I mean you might as well start sending christmas cards and easter bunnys then. The relationship is over. Just leave it be.

If you have no feelings for him whatsoever then work away.
    Otherwise NO !!

I don't see why you would bother. An ex is an ex for a reason. Why leave yourself open to someone reading things wrong, or upsetting your ex's current partner? Just leave it be. If you are on speaking terms and happened to bump into him on the street on his birthday, wishing him a happy birthday would be fine, but seems a little unnecessary to send a text, but that's just my opinion.
