It's a bed bug, sounds like you have an infestation.

I thought bed bugs hid away in dark corners and crevices; in any case aren't they fatter around the middle? I know that New York is the bed bug capital of the world so I won't argue, but it looks like a beetle to me.

Nah it is a beetle. Think it's a mealworm beetle.

I think its a wood beetle or wood boring beetle, what wood worms grow up to be.

They ate the some soft wood in furniture I had a few years ago, they got everywhere.

yeah, that's what it looks like, also called Biscuit Beetle.

Are they in your food cupboards ? Check any foodstuffs you have like Flour, Cereals, Crackers, Biscuits (including cereal based pet foods) etc. and examine the folds of the packaging. They probably got into your house in a contaminated cereal based food product.

Odd thing is, I've never heard of them biting a person

You might need to have your place sprayed. It will be very effective and will solve your problem in one go, provided it is a Biscuit Beetle.

    EDIT :

You're right fuzzbuzz, it could well be one of those too, they're very similar.

Sorry to tell you OP, if its furniture beetle it could be expensive to get rid of them.
Are you renting ? Or is it your own house ?

OP, if you're based in Dublin, pm me if you need someone to have a look at this problem for you.
