basically my main laptop will no longer appear on my wireless network meaning i cant stream movies on xbox or back up files to my netbook.
it keeps telling me network discovery and file sharing are turned off. i click to turn it on and the network devices pop up for a second then back to square one. the same thing happens in windows media player.
the only thing i can think off is i recently installed avast free anti virus????

Probably not the right place for this, but have you checked the firewall settings in avast? Not sure what they;d be under because I don't use it.
