Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Well, my uncle has a rock. It's a strange reddish-brown rock with little white lines/curves in it. They look a bit like shells to me.

I wanted to ask if anyone could help identify it. My uncle has had this rock for a long time and recently asked me to try to find someone who could tell him what it is.

I know this is a weird thing to ask, but I figured I would give it a shot. pacman.gif

I'll try to get a picture of it so ye can have a look. :)

A picture would be very handy indeed. It sounds like it could be sandstone or red chalk though. Where did your uncle get it from?

Here are a few pictures. My uncle isn't going to win prizes for his photography, but hopefully they'll give an idea of what they look like.

Those images I'm afraid to say are pretty bad, very difficult to distinguish the rock, let alone the grain sizes etc. The white features aren't fossils, they look like calcite veins. What I can tell is that it looks somewhat vesicular and it might be sedimentary, probably some kind of mudstone, but it's fairly hard to tell.

try and get an in focus image of the rock. you may need to set your camera to digital macro mode to focus closely. That's the little flower symbol normally. Try to get an image of the whole specimen and another of the finer detail.
if you can't get an image try to answer the following:
is the rock grainy or smooth. Does it look like it's made of sand or mud?
Is there any crystalline structures in it or is the matrix very homogenous?
Is there any bedding structure in it?
Does it feel dense/heavy for its size?
    What are the dimensions?
Where did your uncle get the rock? Is it Irish
