Corsa B 1L - 26mpg?

It looks like my Corsa isn't exactly sipping the juice. 26mpg, mainly suburban start-stop with some back road stuff. Very rarely getting over 60kph in normal driving and I've only got into 5th gear twice!

I checked the throttle body yesterday, it was cleanish, a bit of oil but nothing much. The air intake hose was slightly loose (can't remember if it was before or after the MAF) so I snapped it back into place. The oil filter holder is leaking very slowly but I doubt that's a factor. It's been serviced in the last three months and the air filter is clean.

    Any thoughts?

Hers needed a replacement MAF (was running too rich, especially for NCT emissions), the mechanic made out it was common enough on them.

That sort of constant slow, stop/start driving will clog up cats, lamda sensors, egr valves/pipes etc, any of which could give poor fuel consumption.

The EGR valves can give trouble on these. Maybe that explains why you can't go over 60kph.

I can get over 60kph fine, it's just that the speed limits around here are all 60kph! The thing'll tear up to speed no problem (found that out in a moment of stupidity this evening) but 26mpg is extracting the urine.

Now that I think about it, my driving style might have something to do with it...

A faulty temperature sensor can cause bad MPG but maybe not that bad.

small engine, so if you push it it uses a lot of petrol..

    when was it last serviced?

MAF is very common to go...
EGR are not great on a lot of the opel range, any sort of kangeroo jumping on deceleration from high speed?
Temp sensor are also common enough which can really effect your mpg

get it put on a diagnostic and have it checked for faults.......

It was serviced about 4 months ago. The air filter is clean and the oil is fine. It's definitely a sensor.

    Nope

Temp sensor are also common enough which can really effect your mpg

What kind of symptoms would I get?

Well, you kinda don't expect a 3cylinder 1L car to be smooth at idle or very powerful, so that would mask a lot of the MAF symptoms haha.
The idle on her's did improve quite a bit once it was replaced, but as I said - they ain't the smoothest idlers in the world at the best of times...
The CO emissions were way up at NCT time due to it running rich, I'm sure if she had been doing real mileage in it then the MPG would also have been a flag... but both of these could also be caused by something else...

I suspect you're right about the MAF. It does shudder a bit on takeoff and it'll hunt at idle, but only in reverse for some odd reason. I'll be cleaning the EGR this weekend, and I'll pull out the lambda senor while I'm at it and have a look. Thanks.
