Forbidden Fruit festival

Was tempted but the more I thought about it the more I became untempted. Seen most of the acts before plenty of times (Caribou, flaming Lips, etc. Just my reasons for not going now), Aphex Twin was the only real calling card but when I see him I want to see him in some dark dank room, not an outdoor sunny event.

The cost is a real issue as well. It's not like a festival where you can go back to site and slug on cans. you'll be in there all day paying a load for drinks then turfed out into the City Center for even more €5 pints. Then home, bed, hungover and bus back to town to do it again.

i got a ticket for the sunday. i might head in to see Octave One in the twisted pepper later that night. i wont even bother drinking at it as it's sponsored by bulmers which is kangaroo piss

Octave one should be deadly, didn't even know they were playing.

Yeah it was Aphex Twin which aroused my interest in this one but that's about it. Wouldn't be too familiar with the other acts on. heard good things about Caribou though.

Seriously tempted too, mainly for Aphex Twin as I've never seen him live which is just a disgrace...

Pity about the closing time but as Lief says wander on up to Octave One after to complete the day.

Kilmainham is a nice venue if the weather is ok too - I was there once for Leonard Cohen (yes bit of a contrast) and it was pissing rain, which in fairness kinda matches his mood :pac:

what kind of set did he play at bloc, given he was playing under his AFX moniker? Did he play any of the analord stuff?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 332 ✭✭xdeletiax

i think it was under aphex twin actually, he started off with nice chimey stuff and then got harder- twisted breakbeat sorta stuff, dropped a few dubstep tracks- ramadanmans work them, malas remix of the MVO, then there was some jungle stuff, and he played one of the analogue bubblebaths. then the last ten minutes was just noise. tbh the sound didnt do the music justice- it was the worst quality i heard all weekend, which is weird coz dopplereffekt played on that system earlier that evening and they sounded crisp and heavy. all through the set i was waiting for it to really take off, but it didnt. it was pretty much the opposite of the mind bending 2hr set he did with florian hecker at bloc 2 years ago so he could well do something completely different next month. is there any confirmation from the organisers whether its a dj set or a live show and how long they expect him to play for?

I've seen aphex 4 times and everytime has been completely different. You never really know what to expect from him. Best off not going to see him with any expectations at all

Tempted to bring the missus along to this on the Saturday as an initiation (sort of) to dance gigs. I'm keen on seeing Aeroplane. Is there anyone else on the Saturday that I should be looking forward to?

The Sunday is more on the Dance side of things but if you're going on Saturday check out Beardyman. Erol Alkan will also cover your dance music needs.

Really looking forward to this. I was an obsessive Flaming Lips fan for ages, this'll be my 8th or 9th time seeing them, interested to see if their live shows have gotten any better than how stale they were the last few times...

Really looking forward to Aphex Twin, Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip and Battles as well.

    Spies should be good too!

Going to go on the Saturday only. Give myself some time to recover before heading back to work! Really cant wait to see Aeroplane. Give this guy a listen, you won't be disappointed. Saw him in Oxegen last year and EP the year before.

I thought you were full-on for going to it.

Yeah, the amount of different styles he packed into his set without it seeming like it was thrown together was something to behold. I fúckin loved the jungle part and when he dropped Vordhosbn I couldnt believe it. The 2 or 3 minutes of noise at the end was hilarious, loads of people not knowing what the **** was going on

Apparently Aphex even played music by some Irish producers....a ****ing rarity considering Irish DJ's normally don't even do that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,034 ✭✭✭rcaz

    flaming lips were amazing

The second half of the show was good, but they could have two or three other proper songs if they cut out the let's-all-sing-along-really-slowly bull**** and the talking between songs like we're a bunch of 5 year olds.

aphex twin was absolutely brilliant. the amount of people at it that just didnt seem to get the music was gas, hipster cvnts mainly

Someone in the crowd recorded aphex twins set, sound quality isn't great but it's worth a listen. Quality set!

I wonder was his set actually recorded?

I just realised he played Autechre Vletrmx21, some set!

Yeah I was but unavoidable sh1t came up which prevented me going... such is life at the moment.

Anyway, one day... even if I'm boppin away off my face and clutching my walking stick.
