Plumber or electrician

    Hi,

We have had numerous plumbing problems in the house over the years - most recently the immersion has stopped working. The water will still heat if I turn the central heating on so I don't think it is the element.

There have been issues with the immersion for a while and last year my dad changed the element. A while later the switch on the wall needed to be replaced but the new one has stopped working now. The light comes on but the water does nto heat up. I think it may be an issue with the wiring at the top of the tank and not the switch on the wall - should I call an electrician or a plumber?

either really, just because you have a light on does not mean you have current flowing through the element, it's a double pole switch and either pole or both could have failed

repeated failures would indicate maybe something not right

Thanks. Have an electrician calling out tomorrow. Thought I'd give the plumber a break, he must be sick of seeing us at this point :D

try pressing the thermostat reset button
it operates when the water overheats
turn power off when working on this

Thanks but have opened it up and can't find a reset button.

I think it may be the wiring. There are two boxes - one inside the hot press and the on/off timer switch on the outside.

There is a lose wire on the one inside the hot press (orange) so think this could be the cause

Electrician didn't make it - saying tomorrow instead now :(

That black wire looks like it's from a motorised valve , not an immersion , the cable for an immersion should have a black , brown , blue and earth

Electrician called last night and we have hot water again. Hallelujah :D

He pulled all the wiring out and found a few different problems - told him we'd had a lot of problems with it but he was surprised it ever worked at all!

Took him about an hour and a half to get it sorted and then he tried to only charge us €20
