    Hi Folks,

I'm on the look out for our first car for the missus and she came across a crowd out in Clondalkin called M.R. Automotive. Has anyone heard of them, are they OK to deal with? I ask as I know nothing about who to buy from. A few weeks ago I was looking at Micras from N4 Cars only for you folk to mention we were probably best to give them a miss.

So if the above crowd are best given a miss also, can anyone recommend a dealer to buy a used Micra from?

IMO, you'd be safer buying privately.

MR aren't in the Ballymount/Naas Road part of Clondalkin, they have a long established trade and are very good to deal with. They used to bring in performance cars from Japan and only brought in the highest grade. I know of two cars bought from there recently and both were mint and both over 10 years old.

Finding the right car is more important than finding the right dealer imho. Of course a good dealer is important, and if you find a car you want it's worth checking out the dealers reputation. But I wouldn't pick a dealer then choose from their cars, pick the cars you're interested in first then check out the dealers.

I didn't mean MR in particular, rather that buying privately is (IMO) generally safer than buying from a dealer.

Thanks guys. Of course getting the right car is important, it just happened that they had a car we were interested in, so the missus is going to go have a look today.

I'm afraid as much as I like cars I've never actually bought one or even driven one (the shame I know). I had thought the cars N4 Cars had on display looked alright until a few weeks back you guys gave a loud and resounding message that I should avoid them.

I wasn't poking holes in what you were saying :) I fully agree with you

Buying from dealers in that area usually is a bad idea, this chap would be one of the better ones out there though

My father bought dozens of cars with little to no mechanical knowledge, and never picked a bad one. His approach was to focus on what he could judge - the appearance of the car, the character of the seller, length of ownership, and paperwork. Buying a car from a dealership is in a sense buying blindfolded, as you never get to meet the car's owner at their home.

Following Anan1's advice about buying privately.... do you think it'd be unreasonable to offer €1000?

Not at all - but that's not a private sale BTW!;)

Really? It seems like it could be alright to me. Decent NCT left, reasonable number of miles, spare key. Obviously it'd need to be viewed but what's so bad about it and does anyone else have the same view as Claasman?

Also, I have another question which is really stupid but perhaps you folk can help answer it.

Let's say we wanted to buy that car- or any car for that matter. How are you supposed to get it home? The good lady doesn't drive in Ireland so she's not insured. Obviously as she's not insured she can't bring it home.

Just get the car checked out as you would if you were buying the car anywhere else. If you're skeptical perhaps just be extra cautious.

Right- off on a totally different tangent again. I've spotted a Ford Ka (98 reg) that would fit the bill. Are these cars fairly reliable? Anything I should look out for?

Mods- maybe it might be a good idea to change the thread title to 'Clueless Idiot Has Questions?' has it's kinda moved away from being about MR Automotive.
