Now that it looks like information that led to Osama Bin Laden's demise originally came from Guantanamo in the form of a psuedoname for Osama's courier I would think it seems unlikely that it would be closing down anytime soon. What do you think?

The leads that proved fruitfull were disclosed from detainees several years ago.

From the Wikileaks/Guardian articles on the current situation at the prison, I'm doubtfull if those detainees have much more info to give.

I guess if they feel it still has a purpose then they will keep it open..

It's not closing down any time soon because even though the President wanted it closed down some time ago, he couldn't get it done.

Gitmo is about the detainees, more than about any specific information.

Do you mean the fact that there's no place to release/bring to trial the current detainees? To me that rings a bit hollow as continued detention of dubious legality surely can't be the most sound way of continuing unless the plan is to keep the site open till all the 'high risk' prisoners die of old age. Also the negative impact to Obama's image due to the mistreatment allegations could have been shunted onto Bush if Obama had properly pushed for closure early in his term (as he stated he would) and would have marked him as a real reformer.

This topic was addressed in a recent interview with Obama
Q Guantanamo Bay prison: Will it be closed while you're President of the United States?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, look, there's no doubt that -- we're not going to do it right now. And the reason is, is that members of Congress feel very strongly that we shouldn't and there are a lot of people who are afraid of the possibilities of bringing some of these individuals to the continental United States.

It's my job to give people some assurance that we can handle this effectively, and obviously I haven't been able to make the case right now, and without Congress's cooperation we can't do it. That doesn't mean I stop making the case.

Like a fat lot of good that will do! Mr. Impotent couldn't close an umbrella without congressional approval. Obama is so lame he makes Carter look good.
