I just got an email from Motorcheck about a new car search tool.

There's info on their blog here.
Motorcheck introduces a ‘new’ New Car Search Engine

Posted by Shane Teskey on 29 April 2011 in How we've helped, New Cars

We’re really excited to be launching our ‘new’ New Car Search Engine this bank holiday weekend. It’s the first product of our recent partnership with Jato dynamics and gives consumers the ability to compare multiple makes and model of cars across a variety of different headings.

Helping consumers to make a more informed choice when buying a car is what Motorcheck.ie is good at so we decided to see if there was anything we could do to help those of you looking to buy a new car as well as our car history customers.

Using our new service car buyers can search for a new car under headings that were never before available. For example, someone interested in a city runabout that’s cheap to fuel and tax could perform a search for any car in ‘Band A’ that does ‘at least 60 miles per gallon’.

You can view and search every new car available in Ireland by its VRT band, price range, fuel economy, safety rating or warranty cover. You don’t have to have a specific make and model in mind – the search engine finds everything for you!

    Unique Feature
Another unique feature of the service is that Motorcheck visitors can leave comments on any particular car that interests them and we hope that over time this will become an invaluable resource for buyers who will be able to read the comments and feedback of other owners outlining their own personal experiences with the car.

As well as the innovative search engine the service provides detailed information on over 3,000 makes and model of cars. We’ve included with each listing vehicle pictures, pricing information, technical details and a complete list of standard specification. Videos are already available on a large number of the cars and plans are underway to include reviews from professional Irish journalists.

Why don’t you give it a try and let us know what you think below?

The tool is here and tbh I think it's pretty cool!

What do you think? Any use?

I like it - pretty good.

I presume prices are for boggo spec?

Even though I still think in MPG should economy not be in l/100km?

Would be no harm to have a feature where you could enter your average mileage and it would calculate your running costs for the year and do a comparison with other vehicles in that class.

I'd presume it's ex-delivery because that's the way Jato supply their information, but it has all the specs available.

VRT / Motor Tax bands are just ranges for emissions (CO2 g/km) and since consumption (l/100km) and economy (mpg) essentially tell you the same thing for a given fuel, stated in different units, isn't it pointless searching for multiples of the above in the same search? It would be better to try and educate people as to the meaning of the numbers.

Slightly easier to see some of the info than it is on Carzone, but doesn't add much more functionality. Was hoping there would be access to the Jato comparison tool - which would be very, very handy.

Also, the first car I checked (Ford Mondeo) the data is out of date. It's still listing the 2.0Tdci 115ps Style, but JATO have had the data for the 1.6TDCi 115ps models which replaced it, for a while now (verified 18th February).

I like the looks of it. It's also very quick (but maybe that's because it doesn't have many users yet) and it keeps the search criteria when you browse back.

And it indicates the number of cars found as soon as you enter something in one of the search criteria fields, without having to hit the search button. Nice!

If expanded to second hand cars it would be a very useful search engine!

Particularly like the ability to search by power! With all the new lower capacity high powered petrols, it's often difficult to find the sporty versions of cars (e.g. Golf GT 170)

Small bug in the data update meant that the database wasn't synchronising with Jato correctly. Fixed now so the data gets refreshed every 24 hours :).

@ROR - if you try searching for anything on Carzone (and most other sites) you have to select at least a Make and Model first. On our application these are optional fields so you can run all kinds of cross manufacturer searches. This was the primary reason we took this on.

We have a comparator tool in the works but it will be at least 6 months before it's live.

It's a great new car buying tool. Fair play.

Something I've noticed that I miss - I'd like to be able to select several body types rather than just one (e.g. estate, saloon and hatchback).

Sorry for dragging up an old thread, just wondering if Mr. Motorcheck (or anyone else) knows what has happened to this handy tool?

Had it bookmarked and it was working up until a week or two ago, but I'm just getting a 404 page not found. Don't see any links from the front page either :-(

We've decided to take down the service while some upgrades are being performed but you may well see it making an appearance on another car-related site shortly :)

    Good news so :)

Just had to go on to the UK Government site to get the fuel economy of a car, then eforecourt to convert it to L/100km. Bit of a pain, but still quicker than ringing the dealer.

Still miss the options prices from Carzone though, any chance that will be on the new site, or is there a trade only bit with this info?

To convert MPG to l/100km, just divide 282 by the MPG

I remember that now you've pointed it out, but it's a quick to use a website rather than search for that info.

    Also - isn't it 282.5? :P

U have a spy in here ;) There is a trade service in the pipeline that will have intelligent options and the ability to send customized communications such as quotations etc. Feel free to give me a call if you'd like more detail.
