Correct me if I'm wrong, but does that mean that they basically hold is UFL rights, and if an NFL team wants him in free agency, they can take him without much hassle?
Actually, look at pick number 14 in the draft. To think that guy raised a fortune in our auction fantasty league last year! How the mighty have fallen! :D:D:D:D

The bit in bold is what I was thinking. I can see him holding out for an NFL offer to be honest.

The higher-rated of the free agents will hold out for a shot at getting on an NFL team, but the longer the lockout goes on then the more players will be tempted by the UFL. Any players who do sign an UFL contract will be tied in until mid-October when their season finishes.

Good article on NFL.com about this. The UFL moved their draft forward this year in the hope of capitalising on the raft on undrafted rookies. They are basically saying come play UFL till October and if you do well you'll improve your chances of getting an NFL team.

very hard decision for rookies. Chance of some money and playing time.

Just reading up on Herzlich's story.

Really hope the guy succeeds. Apparently he tested well enough at the combine (29 reps on the bench press) An absolute no brainer free agent for an NFL team. I for one will be hopign he signs for the Giants.

Apparently would have been a top15 pick in the 2009 draft.

If anyone can track down the promo video shown when he was given a special award at the 2010 Heisman Trophy ceremony (the one Ingram won) then throw a link up here. Could damn well bring most people to tears, it was just brilliant.

This one? If not, it's a cool vid about him:

Nah that seems to be more of a home made video. This one had all the trimmings of a well made NFL films-type video. It brought a flickering of heat to my cold, robotic heart.

The Lions will want him, definitely, and he'd have a chance to start.

    No he hasn't

Herzlich says he hasn’t made a decision on an NFL team http://t.co/irxPFPa via @ProFootballTalk

The other team to watch out for on Mark Herzlich is the New York Giants, who have strong Boston College connections.

No doubt he has the big life heart, and I'd love to be wrong on this: but he has a very minute chance of making an NFL Roster. Expect him to be cut during camp.

I wouldnt agree with that Lloyd. Hes not a typical rookie free-agent.
Remember he was a certain first rounder in 2009 as HigginsJ said.
If he has recovered physically(and of course thats a big IF)
He will be a starter on some team come seasons end.

Never say die attitude in buckets obviously, great work ethic, inspirational figure, leader on the field. Thats exactly the type of rookie free agent that will make it. I'll be shocked if he doesn't make the roster tbh.

Every Rookie this season will be rough around the edges, given the lengthened off-season. I daresay there'll hardly be more than a dozen rookies made starters. The ones who will, to quote you, will be the ones with big hearts.

Delighted to be wrong. Fair play to him imo.

The big crime here is he still hasn't been added to the updated Madden rosters.

With Jonathan Goff, starting MLB out for the year he'll be seeing some action this year for sure

Giants are being ravaged by injuries

Tis why I put him down as my surprise player of the year. Herzlich has the perfect opportunity now to prove himself as a pro and as you said Mikemac with Goff injured Mark will see some action.

once sintim went down meant he would get playing time. I think Goff going down means he'll get a bit more but Greg Jones is listed to start there. He's our 6th round pick I think. But I think we'll get a new MLB, which will reduce his snaps. But for the game sunday, Tuck is very unlikely to play, and with Osi out already, means that Kiwi could probable move back to DE for more plays and maybe giving more snaps to Mark, who's the reserve SLB behind Kiwi.

Mark Herzlich’s recovery from cancer has been a terrific story to follow this year.

The former Boston College linebacker made the Giants after going undrafted. He’s been interviewed for 60 Minutes and the Today Show while playing on special teams for New York.

On Sunday, Herzlich is expected to take the next step in his pro development. Look for him to get his first snaps on the Giants defense.

Linebacker Michael Boley won’t play for the Giants Sunday, and Herzlich is expected to help fill in on some sub packages. It’s another cool step in what has been a great comeback story.

“Watch out for Herzlich now,” Mathias Kiwanuka told the Newark Star-Ledger. “He’s going to play well.”
