Screen Broken on a Sony Vaio

Sorry if this is the wrong thread. Please move mods to anywhere else appropriate.

The screen on my Vaio broke today after an unlucky "stepping on it" episode :o.

There is a hairline crack running from top to bottom and like a black ink for want of a better word coming from the crack. (Bit of a technophobe so excuse the description :))

Just wondering can the screens themselves be replaced or will I have to fork out for another new laptop. The model itself is a Sony Vaio VGN-NR21Z and looks something like that.

Its out of warranty so just figuring on prices and such.

I would love any help you can give me.

In Dublin, probably about 130-140 for supply and fitting.

Oh yeah? I thought it would be more around the €250-€300 mark seeing as screens themselves seem to be €100ish on their own on ebay.

I did one of these myself, and it cost around 100 dollars for the screen and I fitted it myself. All you need is a wooden stirrer and a small phillips screwdriver. There are plenty of videos on youtube showing how it's done! It worked for me...

Seen a few of them vids alright and it does look deceptively easy. I think the problems come though if you get a dud screen, your still at square one. If around the €130 mark is right I'll let someone else worry about it :).

i had to replace my wife's sony vaio screen (Vaio VGN-CS21S) recently aswell, i didnt have one of those little wooden sticks but i know the one's you're talking about. i just slid my fingernails under the bezel and eased it off gently. the biggest PITA for me was when i seemed to have misplaced one of the little wine colored bumpers, found it tho after nearly tearing the office upside down!

if it's around 130eur to fix it in Dublin, I'd go for it.
why? I tell you my recent adventure into this kind of DIY. I have a lovely 13" laptop by Lenovo, ultimately thin and stylish that I got to use for a brief 5 months untill I lightly stepped on the egde of it. Screen didn't show any signs of damage but didn't work anymore. I was quoted 135eur to fix it with one Dublin firm. But I found a compatible screen on ebay for 100eur. So I thought 'hey I'm saving 35quid, fantastic!' First screen I bought arrived damaged. I sent it back (postage to uk costs 12eur). I got a replacement. Fitted it. It worked for first time I powered the laptop up, then I needed to restart it and screen never came back on again. dead. I sent it back, 12 eur again. got my money back. bought another screen from different seller. when it arrived it didn't fit my laptop at all. I sent it back !12eur! and got my money back. at this point I spent 36eur + parking + petrol to send those faulty screens back lol.
I gave up, went out and bought myself a new laptop. end of story.

Can anyone recommend a good place to get it fixed?

I recently broke my dell vostro screen and from what i read they are tricky enough to fix.

Make sure whoever fixes it, replaces it with an exact replica and not a generic screen which may not be ideal for your laptop.

Be careful with Sony screens we charge about €139 for most models but the Sony ones are a lot more expensive. Make sure that the brightness control will work when you get it back as most spurious screens don't allow you to control the brightness & this will cause more issues later on
