The OH is looking to get a Diesel A3 in the next couple of weeks. Is there much of a difference maintence wise/running costs between the 1.9 and the 2.0?

I know the 1.9 is supposed to be bullet proof, but have heard little on the 2.0.

Anyone got any experince with these, a few tips would be nice. Thanks.

I would go for the 1.9 for sure! The 2.0 is more powerful and as a result is probably better to drive but the 1.9 is definitely the more reliable option.I work on both engines fairly often and the DMF is the main thing to give trouble on the 1.9.not a whole lot else, the odd injector and other things but nothing else really stands out as a common thing.
The 2.0 however,i have seen 2 that snapped timing belts, one had 101kms on the clock!,egr valves, injectors etc are fairly common and the DMF too...
    1.9 all the way!;)

I have a common rail (CR) 2.0 bought from new. The turbo went last Christmas, thankfully still under warranty. However, the Audi Assist technicians first diagnosed a failed Piezo injector (nothing new there) before the blown turbo was spotted.

I used to drive the old 1.9 PD (07 reg) on occasion at work. It's far noisier than the CR 2.0L and with only 5 gears it sounds even worse at 60-70mph and above (really awful imo!). The six gears in the 2.0L TDI are a blessing. It reduces engine noise when cruising and fuel economy is very good. Even my 170 PS quattro gets 48+ mpg if I stick to the 70 mph limit on A-Roads and Motorways (I live in the UK, hence mph rather than Km/h) and the 170 quattro is a 'gas guzzler' compared to the standard 140 2.0L TDI. :)

So for me, if you definitely want an A3 then the 2.0L is the better option for quieter, more efficient driving imo.
