FAS-Who's Taking The P**s?

I've been out of work for almost three years now & quite
obviously I'm not alone in that field. What vexes me is
the amount of jobs on the FAS website that are WPP1/2.

Surely this has to come to a halt? This mode of practice
is only keeping us in the position that we are currently in
& in my view employers taking advantage of a good situation!

I've looked at countless jobs on FAS disguised as work placements
with sheer contempt. The 39 hour week & the duties that
these companies advertise as a placement!!

It is dissappointing how few ' real ' jobs there are on the FAS site - WPP seems to dominate it alright.

I'd like to see the stats on how many people obtain full time employment after their WPP, either with the same company or another.

Actually what worries me more is the number of "skilled" jobs that are now up as WPP. At least, they were last I checked. Job descriptions looking for people with degrees and Masters - even some looking for people with a certain amount of experience. I thought the whole point of this was to give experience to people with no experience.....

They're kind of jobs that we supposedly need to create more of in this country, yet they are being advertised under the WPP on FAS website?

Time to call a halt to this whole thing, methinks.

It's the system. People got to college to 'get a job'. No-one can set up a business and work for themselves anymore. Then the employers exploit this recession to get cheap/free labour. In the middle are FÁS - complete joke.

Last year I reported two WPP scheme which advertised for experienced people for the placements when I mentioned it to FAS they told me not to apply for the jobs:eek: and the employer might take the joobs down.

Where I work took 20 fairly unskilled workers on WPP, all 20 were trained to a high level in a specialist area of IT support and 16 got full time jobs getting over €50k a year. The other 4 did the program and left, they were just not suitable for a full time role.

If used correctly its a good program but it is easy to abuse.

If it's anything like my place they'll just have a constant cycle of FAS WPPs/volunteers replacing FAS WPPs/volunteers.

The onus (as with everything in this country) is that the users will use it correctly and not abuse it...there doesn't appear to be any regulation from FAS' side, or the SW/Gov side to keep any abuse in check.

It's good to hear one decent story though!

There is a WPP for "Data Entry Executive" for a dental practice in Cork. Now that has to be pure exploitation. Those kind of jobs should not qualify.

Is there not a limit to the amount of people a company can bring in on the WPP? 20 seems a bit ridiculous.

How can unskilled workers be trained in 9 months to do IT support work that pays over 50k a year?. I'm in the business and don't know anyone with little training or experience getting salaries like that, googling IT support on any jobs websites gives salaries way lower than that for experienced staff.

Someone else asked if 20 wasn't a high figure of WPPs in one company. According to the FAS website the max allowed is 25, or 10% of the workforce, whichever is smaller.
Also the business currently must have no vacancies in the area of activity in which the placement is offered so presumably none of the 20 mentioned were doing actual work but getting training.

To be fair it does happen on occasion - I got a full time job with the company I did my placement with for my FAS course back around 2003-ish. Out of a class of 20 though I was the only one.
