Hi all hows things ? I read the 1 sticky I could find on the music courses at Trinity , but still have a few questions floating around my head .. I am going to apply for the B.Mus.Ed next year ,Sep 2012 . The R.I.A.M are in charge of auditons in march 2012 . I really like the look of this course and Im quite excited about the thought of even just applying !!

I finsihed school 10 years ago , got a C in higher music . Been in several different bands since and worked as a drum teacher for a year or two . Im ending the first year in Ballyfermot rock school right now .
Ballyfermots been great , but its not so classically based obviously .

    1) Has anyone done / passed the audition ? What kind of standard / expectations are there ?

    2) In preparation for the written entry exam , should I be digging out my notes from the Leaving Cert / study passed papers etc or is the standard higher than the LC?

    3) Does anyone know of a course / classes that I could attend this summer to kick start 11 months of hardcore cramming ?

Thanks for reading , any help here what so ever is much appreciated .
    Cheers , Gav

There is one unofficial place every year for a mature student.
Your best bet is to get in touch with the woman who runs the course and shadow the students for a day to get an idea of the standard.

To be honest, you need piles of ambition and determination to stay in the course. Once you have that there will be no problem ;)

This is not your average college course, in the first few years the hours are insane and work load is heavy. With only 10 people in every class its more like school.

In terms of the entrance exam, a lot of it will be determined on your interview. You would want to have a good grasp of the basic musical components, nothing too deep (but the course moves fast so keep up!). You also need a strong interest in teaching. The course is 40% Education, 60% Music.

But yes its awesome!!! APPLY :D

The last post pretty much covered it. I'm in second year at the minute. Really enjoying it, but the first year was pretty hectic, especially how you are split between DIT (or the academy) and trinity for lectures.

The audition I think is about a grade 6 standard so they say, but really just go in with some confident pieces and it should be fine. I also agree with the last post, that it's worth shadowing for a day to see how things go on.

Sorely in need of a drum player in this course if you ask me!

I can't remember the written exam too well to be honest, but I thin it was of a similiar level to the L.C

Don't hold me to that though. PM me sure if you have any other questions about the course!

Thanks very much for your replys , really helpful and encouraging . I am looking for something that will really challenge me and push me . I am psyched about the thought of being a teacher of a class , different vibe to one on one lessons I know . My dad was a teacher , studied at Trinity too . I just borrowed his old copy of Norman.l.Munns ' fundamentals of psychology ,' that he studied from to get his H.dip back in the early 60's . Is this book still refferd to for the psycholgy parts of the course ?

Also I was talking to Martina Kearns a week or so ago , If I want to go in and shadow a class as you say , do I just ring her and kind of book an appointment?
    Thanks again

Oh god yes it's challenging. We've had professional musicians who have come back to college and found the course a handful. I promise you won't be bored ;)

Don't worry about books in fact Psychology is only one module in 4th year its more the practicalities and teaching of education that you tend to go towards.

I would get in touch with Marita Kerin next September to organise a shadow for you in October of next year when the classes are back on...its all exams at the minute.
