I'm new to this forum but hoping someone can please give me some advice. I have an 05 Micra and have been told that a bearing has gone in one of the rear wheels. It makes a loud humming noise when moving which increases with speed and driving on bends or curves in the road but is reasonably quiet when driving below 30kph.Firstly, I need to know how dangerous it is to drive the car with this problem and secondly, how easy is it to have fixed and a rough guide to cost.I have to drive to work every day and I'm concerned in case I do some damage to the car driving it with this problem.Any help would be much appreciated.

Was it a garage that told you it was a bearing? or some know it........................... well :p.Yeah it does sound like it alright. In extreme cases the wheel can lock up so get it done as soon as you can.Its a run of the mill job even for a DIYer although some cars require the whole hub to be changed but its still a straight forward job, but get it done.Sorry wouldn't have a clue about cost.

As already said not the end of the world and you are grand to drive around but in some cases the bearing can collapse. Best thing is to get a mechanic to fix it for you, its only a cheap enough job.

Thanks for that Jimmy, I thought it might need doing fairly quickly. It was a reliable mechanic who told me it needed doing when he was doing a service for me. Unfortunately, he didnt have the bearing to replace it at the time and is away for a week or two so I just wondered how safe I'd be till he got back as I do drive it every day.

Might be better to get it done sooner than a week especially if your driving it every day.

The more you drive it the more damage likely it is you will damage the stub axle. Either way it would have to be checked before replacing the bearing.

A replacement bearing is not an expensive job, circa €80 - €100 parts and labour in an independant garage.
