Visa questions from someone currently working in Ireland

Hi, I'm working in Ireland on a working holiday visa from Toronto (Canada) that has almost expired, and my employer is working on getting a proper work visa for me for when my current one expires.

Since this is all pretty new to me, I'm hoping someone who has been through it before or knows about the process could clarify a few things for me:

    - How long would the new visa be for? Does the Irish government offer a standard 1 year work visa?
    - If in that period either the company terminates my employment or I leave, do I have to leave the country right away? Or am I permitted to remain in Ireland for the remainder of the visa period if I decide to live off my savings and not earn an income?

I'm also curious to know, is it a pretty lengthy or expensive process for my employer to apply for a visa on my behalf - if anyone knows a bit about the process or what it costs the employer, I'd be interested to know.

    Thanks!
