new stereo - very low power, distortion

I just replaced the stereo in an 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo. The old one was working fine but it was a cassette player. There was an equalizer connected to the old stereo via a circular DIN type connector, which wasn't supported by the new stereo, so I removed the eq altogether, and connected the speaker wires directly to the new unit.

Now it works, but I have to turn the volume up all the way on the new unit just to be able to hear it even with the engine off. The sound is also very distorted. This is from a CD not the radio. Any ideas?

Have you any problems with playing music from the CD, or is it just the radio?

I hadn't used the radio, it was just from a CD that I had the problem.

Anyway it's sorted now - I was using the line level RCA outputs which are intended for a power amp. Once I realized that there were separate powered speaker outputs I switched over to those, and it's all peachy now! Thanks anyway.
