To be perfectly honest, the main deciding factor of an airsoft gun is what you the owner likes the look of. Let's face it, we are a pretty vain sport/hobby. Virtually everything we buy is based on aesthetic quality, not performance.

In my book, performance is very much next to aesthetics...if I'm not happy with the look/feel of the gun, I'm not going to want to use it. It doesn't matter how good it is, it just won't happen.

So, what do you like? The classic looking M14's & Thompsons, the more modern and iconic M4 & AK, or the modular assault rifles of the Masada, SCAR, F2000 etc - or are you more partial to the smaller SMGs like the MP5 and P90 etc? There are lots of guns out there - all depends on what you prefer.

G&G are a great brand; can't go wrong there. And the JG G36 is universally acknowledged as bomb proof. :)

PS: You'll probably end up owning all three anyway

The G&G raider is a great gun. Decent rate of fire and good accuracy and range out of the box - a great starter gun.

The JG G36 is, as Inari said above, rock solid. It's pretty good straight off - and there are loads of upgrade parts available for it.

Of the two I'd go for the raider - mainly because I already have a load of aegs that take stanag (m4 type) mags.

I got the JG G36c as my first AEG and was really happy with it, good range and accuracy too out of the box.

And I also agree what everyone else has said about it being bombproof, it's taken a few knocks and is still fine.

Both guns are very good, but the magazines for the Raider are compatible with a lot of other guns.
I dont think the G36 magazine is compatible with any other gun, I hope someone more expert will comment please.

Go with the one you like.

Dogwatch is right... you're going to have an easier time using m4 mags in another gun that takes stanag mags... Scar, fn2000, Tar-21, FNC, M16, Sa80, M249 even!

G36 mags as he says are compatable with... g36s... and xm8s (but we dont talk about those) Tbh, with a mag converter (HATE that look) G36s take m4 mags too... so its a pretty safe option if you want compatability... if you dont care, go for what you think looks best to you. Afterall, its all 6mm plastic.

Beat me to the two points I was going to make :)

You can get the G36c to M4 magwell adaptor for about €15 new in the shops ( http://www.mainirishairsoft.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=801 ). My friend uses it in his G36c and M4 mags are a lot easier to find/buy/borrow mid-game.
