Cloning a Mac Hard drive ...

I'm running PT8.01cs2 on a G5 Quad which I bought a couple of years ago, the last of the PPC machines.

I want to replace the system hard drive with a new one.

I have access to another G5 ( a dual). Could I drop the new drive into the Dual and using the OS 'copy from another computer' function, clone everything across from my G5 quad ?

Having completed that clone can I now drop in my new drive and carry on as before ?

I'm wondering how licenses travel - Massey Plugins licenses for example .
Are they tied to the drive ? ... or is it to the motherboard or what ?

    Thanks in advance.

I use superduper to make an occasional backup of my system drive.

Put a new drive in a free drive bay & follow the prompts. Superduper will make an exact copy of the system drive. No need for another computer. No issues with licences as far as I know as long as you use the same computer.

    Just from experience:-

Dongles/USB stick licenses travel no problem.

Anything else usually needs re-licensing - some maybe a challenge response and some are limited re-installs (this has to be watched out for with constant hardware changes)

The challenge response won't appear until you actually fire the plugin up.

Fantastic ! I have another drive ready to go so I'll try that. Even if there is a hiccup or two I'll have the original drive to pop back in. Thanks.

Now you mention that I think you referred to that before. Thanks too.

You're right in your thinking, those are tied to the drive and nothing can clone them. Went through this last year. PITA. So now I have a text doc backed up listing all my serials.

I recently cloned my macbook drive using disk utility and I have had no problems even with plugs that use challenge and response.

As you say you always have the old one to stick back in if it doesnt work.

Decided to use Carbon Copy Cloner (and donated me $15 for it!).

All works fine except for Drumagog which just needed a Re-Authorise.

    Thanks for everyone's Help!
