I'm just browsing E Class mercs (just browsing, not buying) at the moment when I thought, given the engine size of 1.7 for a Petrol model, isn't this seriously under-powered or what?

    Example

It's not just about engine size, that one is supercharged and would have a higher power output (160bhp according to website below) than your average 1.6 Focus, etc.

Then again, it is a heavier car. I've never actualy driven one though, so I'm sure somebody else would be able to give you less generic information. Just remoeber though, it's not only about engine capacity.

ah OK, thanks Kevin. I suppose I should have looked for the BHP value too.
    Nice car though....I can dream.

That is carzy money for that one. You can pick up a similar diesel one for that sort of money.

They are 180 bhp I believe and respectable enough. They were the entry model but with the vrt changes in 08, the diesel model dropped in price leaving the petrol version seriously overpriced and with no market. Mercedes had to cut the pricing to get them sold. An 08 diesel should be around 25k retail Id say. That 07 petrol should be much cheaper.

Just to be pedantic, that ad is incorrect. actual capacity is 1796cc which makes it a 1.8ltr.

And for the people in the future that search for E class mercs and find this thread when they are looking to buy!

Completely off topic top tip. The engine cover of the 270 CDI cuts a fuel line eventually. If you own one or get one make sure the garage fixes it. I think its under some kind of warranty/recall.

There is a reinforcing plastic rib that goes along the engine cover that that vibrates against a fuel line. Surprisingly sharp to touch I have to say.

I saw that E200 in Park Motors last week, it's in good shape but the price is too high, should be much closer to 20K. Grange Mercedes had a 66,000 miles 07 E200 for 18,950 a few weeks ago.

I live near Grange and was looking for an E200 but on Friday last one of the sales lads told me that a UK dealer came over and took away all of their E class stock, must be the recession!

The engine capacity as an earlier poster said is actually 1,796 c.c., I believe the bhp of the E200 is 184 bhp and they are a good car to shift. The C180, C200 and E200 share the same four cylinder engine block but the C200 and E200 turbos are more powerful than the C180.

Tax under the old system is 551 p.a.

If you want that tip to come up in a Google search then I'd say you should have quoted the model as 'E270 CDI', the way it appears on the boot lid, I doubt if anyone will search for '270CDI'.

    Done!

I missed a space. My bad. Anyway doesn't matter too much. This thread is easy to find on the new search Boards put in.
