I couldn't let it pass without saying something. But it is a good question, are they being used in the fight? If not, why not?

The Irish Independent has this quote from Bobby McMenamin:
We received assistance from the civil defence for the fire in Glenvar, but we had to ask the army to come in as our men are getting fatigued now

I haven't heard of them being called up anywhere else yet but I would expect if Defence Forces are called in, it would be after CD units have already been raised and extra manpower is still required.

if their men a fatigued why aren't they looking for help from other fire service in neighboring counties

i was just wondering, and hopefully some from the north west or even our fire fighting friends across the border.
In Donegal we have the local authority fire crews, the civil defence fire crews, the army, the air corp and members of coillte all dealing with gorse and bog fires.
does anyone know what sort of resource are been used just north of the border in thie same region considering that the army and RAF wouldn't be used in the nature we use our defence force for security reason, also they seem to be a bit more prepared for this kind of thing, is it because they have a lot more structured service and can call on resource across the 6 counties as opposed to just one county.

Sligo and Leitrim have also been dealing with wildfires, as have many other counties. The Defence Forces do have teams trained in firefighting btw, it's not necessarily a few lads with shovels. That said, the techniques for tackling wildfires are quite different to those used in tackling building fires, sometimes lads with shovels is what is needed.

Louth have also been using Civil Defence units to help build firebreaks according to the Irish Times though it's not clear whether these were AFS or other vols.
