    Hi

I am wondering if I am entitled to a British passport. I've read other threads and british gov websites and cant find info on my particular situation (though i thought it would be quite common). My mother was born in england after 1949 and moved to ireland when she was 5, she has a british birth cert but has never held a british passport but i assume she is entitled to one. I was born in ireland after 1983 and have been here my whole life, am i entitled to a british passport by descent?

And i've read other threads and these questions seem to set people off on a "why would you want british passport, are you not proud to be irish" rants. Its just an enquiry. Thanks

the simple answer is YES you can get a british passport.

my mother was born in england and moved here 30odd yrs ago. i was born here and i got a british passport. there is a section on the form to fill out about how you are entitled if i remember but nothing major.

Hi guys, I was born in 1981 and my mother is from Derry, was born and grew up there. I was born in the Republic.

Would I be able to get a British passport, and if so, how would I start the ball rolling on that?

doubt it considering derry isn't in britain.

have a look here though http://britishembassyinireland.fco.gov.uk/en/help-for-british-nationals/passports/

Derry is in the UK, so he could be eligible for a UK passport

    OP, according to this document:
    http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/documents/britishcitizenship/informationleaflets/bnchapters/bn4.pdf?view=Binary

If i read it right you can register to become a UK citizen (meaning entitlement to passport once that is through) if one of your parents is British and youre born abroad after 1983.

The relevant section is section 10 - "CHILDREN WHO ARE BORN OUTSIDE THE UNITED KINGDOM TO BRITISH CITIZENS BY DESCENT"

    Better consular support.

Having two passports also allows you to use one for going to certain countries (say US, Israel, etc. and the other for Arab countries) which can lead to less hassle at immigration.
