Cant find anything on this. I have set up my ireland.com e mail account on the iphone and can receive e mails no problem.

Problem is I get a relaying server error message when trying to send e mails so I cannot send e mails via the iphone.

Any suggestion for an alternative outgoing server?

Anyone able to help on this?

Could you post how to set up the iphone for ireland.com emails. I haven't figured it out yet and others might be interested.

To send outgoing e-mails you will need to use your network provider's SMTP server, the same applies to home broadband users. Incoming mail is from the e-mail network's POP3 server but you have to use your own network's SMTP server for outgoing mail.

Networks typically will only handle outgoing mails coming from their own customers, this prevents them from being used by zombie servers on other networks to send spam.

Tell us which network you're iPhone is on.

I'm on vodafone. I'm in my 50's so if you could use non technical language I might just get my head around it.

Found these by using the search facility.

You need to set your outgoing mail server to mail.vodafone.ie

You said you could receive e-mails no bother so you're almost there, just change the outgoing mail server and you should be in business.

If you see any mention of SMTP, that is the same thing as the outgoing mail server.

Two of those queries got no reply and the third relates to the 3 network. He wasn't asking for a lesson in how to use Google!

And you obviously didn't bother looking through the last 2.....
    It isn't Google either....its a Boards facility.

Same principle applies, as on the Three threads. You just need to put in the VF details instead. AFAIK, if you seach SMTP on the Vodafone website, it gives you those details. iPhone 3 or 4 doesn't make any difference, its all the same.

I looked on the 3 website before trad said he was on Vodafone, couldn't find anything on a drill-down or by searching for 'outgoing' or 'SMTP', you're on your own I'm afraid, maybe ring their call centre.

Hiya, I have the same problem. have Hotmail working (in and out) ok but on Ireland.com outgoing mail I have 'relaying' problems. I saw a boards suggestion to add in the '3' SMTPX outgoing server ID (i'm with 3) but it didnt seem to work. Any one got specific instructions? Tx

You have to use 3's SMTP : mail-relay.3ireland.ie on 3G and your own ISP's SMTP settings on home/work WiFi. Put in both and the phone will try both until it get the one that works.

Get rid of Ireland.com's SMTP settings altogether.

    Incoming mail server: pop3.ireland.com
    Server Port: 995

    Outgoing mail server: smptx.ireland.com

    But I changed to: mail-relay.ireland.com
    Server Port: 587

It seems to work for sending but the receiver sees a 'senders name on behalf of senders @ a second e mail adress.

I would prefer if the sent message was seen as from my ireland account.

Any ideas how this could work.

Yours is same as mine now, but my server port is 25.
My emails don't show what you have.....check your settings in mail, calendar etc....make sure you don't have yourself cc'd for example.

I emailed ireland.com and here's the reply I got for an iphone 3 on vodafone

    Good Afternoon

Here are the settings for IMAP on the iPhone:

Go to settings, then go to mail, contacts calendars

    Click add a/c

    Click other

    click add mail a/c

    then

    Name: yourname
    Address: yourname@ireland.com
    Password: your password
    Description: is automatically populated

    Click save.

On the next screen you need to enter in

    Incoming mail server

    Hostname: imap.ireland.com
Username: yourlogonname (dont include @ireland.com on this part)

    Outgoing Mail server

    Hostname: smtpx.ireland.com

You dont need to re enter your username or password

    Hit save

After a minute or two your a/c will be ready to use.

If you have trouble sending out emails - as some people with the iPhone 4 have
done, it means that your phone service provider wants you to use their own
outgoing server to send, instead of ours. If you call them they will be able to
    provide this information.

Hi I have exact same problem. I can receive emails on Ireland.com but cAnt send. None of the already suggested solutions work. What should the outgoing server settings be? I'm on 3G. Very frustrated!
