    Hey folks,

Hope this isn't a FAQ - my searches weren't too fruitful...

I've decided that I get too sweaty wearing a backpack/rucksack on the commute, so I'm looking into getting a rack and panniers.
Were's the best place to buy (I'm in Dublin) ? Any particular makes or models recommended ?
    Budget is quite tight unfortunately.

    Cheers,

    - moist.

A good selection: cyclesuperstore.ie in Tallaght

But it will cost you a bit of money for the bag if you want to have one that is waterproof.

Rack should cost around €25-30 and panniers the same if you get the cheapest ones, which will be far from the best but fine for commuting (expensive panniers you can pay over €100.)

As for the rack, if you are weight sensitive (like me) the Tortec Ultralite is hard to beat, cheap, solid and light (400g.)

This is seen on a fair few commuters, and at 33 quid won't break the bank. You should be able to pair it with something like this to sort out your sweaty back problem for under 75 quid

I got the panniers Argos have the weekend, made by Raleigh and not bad at all for the price at 26.99, loads of room for stuff, you can take the top bag off and just use the two sides if you want to, id advise putting your stuff inside plastic bags as they dont say if their waterproof. Id recommend them.

Didn't see the point starting a new thread for a similar question...

My commute has recently gone from 4k each way to 7k each way and will soon be increasing to 12km. I'll be going back to college so I'll probably need to take more stuff with me than I do for work at the moment. It won't be a huge amount of stuff - change of clothes, shower stuff, and probably a folder or two, maybe laptop.

I'm considering panniers instead of/ in addition to my backpack... BUT.. I really like how my bike looks and I might be doing some duathlons next year and would like if I could get a rack that I could easily put on/ take off.

My bike is the 2010 Giant Dash 2.. any recommendations?

A standard rack goes on or off with four Allen bolts, it is not an involved job.

EDIT: Just to add, you can get a quick release seatpost mounted rack but they are heavier, less stable, have a much lower weight limit, put the panniers higher which is worse for handling and cant be used on a carbon post. Unless you want to swap the thing out daily I would go for a standard rack.

I use this for touring: http://www.topeak.com/products/Racks/RXBeamRack_w_side_frameV-Type

It will only take up to 7kg, so the laptop and other stuff could be pushing it a little. Also only weighs about 400 g and comes off in a few seconds with two allen bolts.

This one is heavier, but has a quick release and also takes more weight.

If your going to be commuting I'd say you should get the waterproof ones. I can't remember the name of them, but a friend of mine has yellow ones. €105 for the pair with the rack I think (But could be wrong) but with a lifetime guarantee. I am only mentioning it becuase he had a spill on the bike and got a tear in one of them, rang them to ask them to repair it, they just sent him a new one. Arrived within two days. I must ask him what the name was. He is always signign their praises anyway. Worth the investment I would imagine.
