How to recover a username password?

    Howdy
So I have a bit of a problem. I set up a password on my mums laptop a while ago so I could remote log in when I'm away to help her out if she needs some help.

Though that led to an annoying log in screen on Windows 7. So using Advance SystemCare 4 I tried to set up automatic log in. When I put in the username and pass and restarted the pc it now only gives me invalid password. I can always install Ubuntu recover files and install a fresh install of w7. But is there any other way of doing this without this much hastle?

    Any help.appreciated :)

ntpasswd is an alternate tool to get the job done.

Well I don't need a guarantee and I understand why it picks it up like. Though once I finished download ie9 flagged it as a virus. Didn't see did Microsoft security essentials do anything.

You could try downloading it using a different browser.

THE OFFLINE PASSWORD EDITOR WORKS AND THE LEGIT USER WILL KNOW THEIR PASSWORD HAS CHANGED

PEOPLE REUSE PASSWORDS FOR OTHER THINGS LIKE ONLINE BANKING AND EMAIL SO YES, IT IS AN ISSUE

SO NO PASSWORD CRACKS TO BE POSTED - EVER !

THERE ARE NO LEGIT REASONS FOR POSTING THEM.

Its for my mother :) you can ask er if you like :P i know her password. Just might have had a typo when i was putting in the auto log in option as there was no option to reconfirm the password entered in Advance SystemCare 4

And sorry for breaking the rules :)

you didn't break the rules because you didn't ask for a password crack

also as you can read files with ubuntu you'll know that with physical access the password doesn't really stop much

also to use the NT password reset disk you need physical access

Ah its no help now :)

The laptop battery has been going dead and asking for replacement for a while. So i figured out it would have been just easier to instal ubuntu on a flash drive and copy files and use the factory restore CD's and restore to new...

And the laptop battery died completely lol. So have to wait for a new battery now...

all i get is a battery icon flashing :D

Hi Capt'n. If I broke the rules I apologise but can you explain to me why it is perfectly ok to publish said information all over boards elsewhere but not here:
    http://www.boards.ie/search/?q=ophcrack
Including on threads you yourself have commented on:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=71050793
and including posts by other mods
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=60189660&postcount=5

It would be just nice to know for the future if what I did was against the rules globally on boards or just here.

Because it's specifically excluded at the very start of the charter of this forum.

    NO WAREZ!
    NO HACKZ!
    NO APPZ!
    NO CRACKZ!
    NO! NO! NO!

I'm not a mod on those forums

In general illegal activities are against the rules on boards.

Software licensing is Byzantine so in some cases I prefer to err on the side of caution.

My main concerns with password crackz is that the user should know the password has been interfered with in case they need to reset other passwords and anyone with a reason to use a crack should have physical access to the computer anyway and if so the NT password reset disk is the most visible, quickest, easiest way of resetting the password.

Obtaining someone elses' password is tantamount to ID theft, unless they have set their system up to require a separate and diferent password for their email you can check for password reset emails. You could probably request a new password online for their other other logins to be sent to their email address and delete those emails when the arrive. It's not rocket science.

In general if setting a machine up for family / friends you could simply setup an admin account that can reset their passwords if needed (actually that's even easier than the NT password reset disk)
