If you know anyone who's into guitar bring them along to a guitar shop and ask them to try out all of the entry level guitars and see which is the nicest to play. Makes a big difference learning on something that isn't a piece of sh*t. Plus you can get very very well made Squire Stratocasters/Telecaster for that kind of money.

And definitely splash out on an amp. You can get a starter pack with an amp - but those are absolute muck or you could get a something like a Micro Cube which is an infinitely better amp for not much more, but it's not essential if the budget doesn't stretch and the starter package is cheaper. If you're in Dublin go to Xmusic and see what kind of a deal they'll make for you with a guitar, amp and a lead

Agree with last poster. I would never buy a guitar off the internet. Get an experienced player to go to a music shop with you and try out different guitars. Even within the same range of guitars, you will get good ones and bad ones, so it's important to try before you buy.

I would steer clear of ebay anyway, there's so much junk available it's hard to get a decent guitar unless you really really know what you're looking at.
Plenty of cheap starter guitars available in guitar stores here and some shops are open to a bit of bargaining.

I'll do one better than that.

My friend is selling one that I'll vouch is nice to play and I'll even set it up for you first too. Helping out both sides! He'd sell it for €100

The one Paddy posted to is much better. Same price better guitar. THe SG special retils aroun 150 - 200. The G400 which Im guessing the second one retilas around 350. My one cost me 425 new a good few years ago. They are very good starter guitars. I have had mine for 8 years or so and still going strong. The newer ones are not as good as the old ones but still a good buy. Not sure if they are as versityle as a strat but still a good buy.

For a beginner guitar I wouldn't bother but once you're spending a few quid on something I would look online long before I'd buy something in a shop unless you happen to be on holiday or something.

Prices online are better than what you find locally. However, you are taking a chance buying online as you could end up with a guitar that is difficult to tune and play, and such an experience would probably put a beginner off for life. The best balance between cost and quality is a good second hand guitar.

I disagree. Many local prices can be the same or better then online prices. Depend on what you are looking at. Sometimes they might be within a tenner of the online price which to be honest I would pay considering the service I would get in a local shop, the backup I would have if something went wrong and also knowing that my money isnt going abroad. Here are some examples.

4 euro more expensive in waltons but you save overall when you count the shipping.

Almost 200 euro cheaper in a local shop

    http://www.iminmusic.ie/45/79/product/398/PEAVEY_BANDIT112_GUITAR_COMBO.html
Only 6 euro more expensive in iminmusic and again staying local and having support as well as not bankrupting the country by sending all of our money abroad.

    10 euro cheaper in Ireland

Dont automatically assume online is cheaper. A lot of stuff is cheaper in Ireland.

Also more and more companies are setting standard prices on the gear world wide so it is the same price no matter hwere you buy it.
