Hi all, I'm not sure if this is the right place to start this thread so excuse me if it is not.

I have a friend who believes he is being taken advantage of in work so I was just wondering if anyone would agree based on his situation.

He is a security Guard and is working in Dublin city. His issue is that he is employed as a security guard and as such is getting paid the basic security guard wage which is 10 euro ph, but in actual fact security plays a very small part in his daily duties.

The other option is that he's just a laborer and should only get a minimum wage...

Labourers actually get paid a lot more than minimum wage, in fact an experienced labourer can earn from 13 to 17 euro an hour according to the construction Joint Labour Agreements (JLA's)

He is actually doing a lot of the management of the building and duties that are nothing to do with security so I dont think you appreciate the situation.

Is he a proper security guard, like does he have a PSA licence?

I've done all those tasks in a job I had and I was a porter.
Seems he is more of a porter then a security guard

Does he have a contract with the employer?

Would you not rather do all of the above than be static security? I wouldn't see it as exploitation anyway. Could he ask for a job description? Tenner an hour is a fair enough wage for the work you've described I would have thought?

As far as I know he has a PSA licence and a contract for security.
I would say its closer to porter work than security, accept he told me the building manager is rarely in the building and he has to deal with the tenants and complaints etc.

Well personally I would do anything for work, but that doesnt mean I would do work I wasnt getting paid to do.

I mean the guy could be getting the same money for watching movies on an industrial site somewhere or studying or whatever.

His job description is for security, not facilities management.

If he doens't believe that his wage is appropriate for the job, he should either:

    - negotiate with his manager, or
    - look for a new job.

Labour markets are all about demand and supply.

Without knowing the exact duties expected of your friend I don't think he is been exploited.

The security industry has come a long was since the days of an auld fella watching a factory gate or warehouse at night. Nowadays, security personal are expected to monitor alarms, cctv, and building management systems. Control access, receive and distribute post, act as a point of contact for the public or the tenants.

Some would also be involved in parking management, cash handling, goods in / goods out. There are just some examples from the top of my head

While your friend might think he is been overworked for the pay he receives, he is receiving the appropriate rate for the industry.

Next time he feels over worked and under paid ask him to consider the duties of a security guard employed in a hospital A&E department, who would receive about the same level of pay.
