I dunno if people are going to find this useful, but in the course of some googling I just found this site-

It's really really interesting, it goes through the whole history of mens black tie wear, from the advent of the tuxedo, all through the different variations that have existed... And tips on what to wear and how to wear it.

I just thought it might be useful for the guys who pop up every now and again and asking questions about hiring a tux or what to wear to a debs, etc...
