    Hi all,

Does anyone think that this could work here in Ireland?

Probably not due to insurance reasons...

There have been several threads on this in the past, including one from a guy who was thinking of setting it up himself. No harm to search them out. They pretty much cover all the basics in there.

No it will not work here unfortunatley.

It has been discussed before and insurance is a killer. One of the lads here thought hard about setting one up.

Edit PD explained why!!. I remember the guy was told what would he do if someone burnt themselves while making a cup of Coffee in the canteen..:rolleyes: Yes I can service a car but I cannot make a cup of cha...

I remember that but the more I think about it, that is pretty standard stuff from insurers. A Professional & detailed health and safety plan for the project would likely have satisfied alot of the stupid requests from insurers. The cost of cover is another issue though.

There is one, because I remember emailing someone a bout it and he emailed me back prices and that.

I think it might have to work on a sort of a club basis, i.e. people have to be paid up members who are using the facilities and this somehow get around some of the insurance problems.

Yea sorry guys, I should have gone back a bit further in the forums to see if it was discussed before.

Seems like a non-runner. Brilliant idea in principle though.

Somebody is having a go at it here

An older thread on the same topic.

In essence - insurance costs wouldn't allow it.

I'd love to have one in Galway, if only for lifting the car up occasionally and having a look underneath.
It'd make even small jobs like oil changes etc so much easier.

Two axle stands and you can reach under. Oil change easily done. I do it in a car park space outside an apartment. Insurance here is generally crazy as a result of health and safety legislation being and open to interpretation.

The dangerous word of "reasonable" As said if some special case scalds themselves with tea you legally need to report it. Been on the receiving end of this and filling out a stupid form for me being a muppet in front of a health and safety officer. (There is no your a Muppet and have personal responsibility clause)

Having talked to someone running a house and grounds outside Westport I nearly fainted when the told me the amount of public liability they pay each year.

If someone doesn't understand how to use a lift or falls in a pit...... Things get daft quick.

That depends on the car really though. A low car with a large engine undertray is a compete pita to do with axle stands. Then again though, if you paid to rent a lift to do it yourself, it would probably be as expensive as paying a garage to supply oil and filter and do it for you. I've never got around to getting one myself, but I've read on a few boards that oil pumps (and particularly yachting oil pumps) do the job well: http://www.fiatforum.com/ducato/197279-quick-oil-change-suction-pump.html

To get back OTish, There used to be a railway arch in south London where you could rent a lift and tools to work on Motorbikes. It was a good place with plenty of free help and advice around, but I doubt things like insurance had ever crossed their mind.

Used to be a place like this in Finglas many years ago. It was called Pit-Stop. As far as I remembered they also supplied the parts.

Under their insurance you were not allowed to drive your car to the pit oe put it on the ramp in the garage, one of their employees had to do it. They were quite strict about this

My late Father, with me as the young helper, put a new clutch into an old Mk 2 Ford Cortina Estate with a colum gear shift. The mechanic on duty at the time, was really surprised when we finished the replacement and he was able to drive the car off without any problems. He told us that he normally had to finish off those type of jobs as most amateurs were way out of their depth.

    Proud moment!!:)
