Sean Gallagher running for president

I knew little about him but upon reading up, he's got ego merchant written all over him. I would also suspect that all his early and some recent achievements must be due to some form of political/family connections.
If the thinking is that as an entrepreneur he can help the country in some way, why the presidency, would the Dáil not be the place to go?
I feel years working his way up the rungs to make real change does not appeal especially when he can jump in to the presidential race.
It's another example of why, for reasons unbeknownst to me, we have a tendency to look up to all business folk like they're the salt of the earth and have all the answers.

Do you have to have political career to run for president :D cushy job :p

So far Michael D Higgins and David Norris are the only ones who deserve to be candidates.

    Note to all!!

Sean Gallagher is a stringent Fianna Fáiler!

He's Fianna Fáil presidential replacement candidate for Bertie Ahern.

Just in case that might impact on your decisions in any way.

I didn't like the guy anyway. I think he would be a terrible politician.

The fact that he is involved in FF explains his arrogance.

Very poor choice so far. Nobody that would win over the majority yet. Hope there are some more worthy candidates to come. Those so far are very inferior to past Presidents! Higgins is the only one I would vote for.

Last decent president Sean T O Kelly.
    Now get rid of it.

We have not nominated any person yet. Yes he is a Fianna Fáil member, but in no way is he our presidential campaign candidate as of yet.

Nor was Bertie Ahern ever going to get the candidacy. Crowley would have got it well ahead of Bertie at all stages - and Crowley will probably still end up FF's candidate I would imagine.

    SG got lucky with Smarthomes

Has he done anything of significance since apart from lobbying for subcontractors and charging fortunes for his personal appearances?

I also think he plays a bit on his eyesight difficulties. Alot of people have various handicaps - just get on with it!!

Also, is there a chart to show how much each Irish Dragon has invested over the years - would make interesting reading.

Why would anyone vote for him? Why does he even think anyone would vote for him?

I would be very surprised if he was actually trying to run. No way he gets the nomination anyway.

If he could get the votes then the presidency is the perfect career move, following his run his speaking fees would sky rocket. That is the only reason he is doing it.

It's funny because if he was actually a good business man and entrepreneur he would know that running for president is not a viable proposition for him as the CBA doesn't work out well. His core selling point is his entrepreneurial instinct but if you look at his track record, it is mediocre at best.

Hopefully this isn't a trend, the last thing anyone wants to see is Bill Cullen and all the penny apples deciding to run as well.

Norris seems to be the most viable candidate to come forward to date.

Sweet Jesus, it's Ireland's answer to Donald Trump. Something tells me Sean Gallagher is surrounded by a lot of yes-men. A seemingly awkward syntax on Gallagher's press release seems to confirm!
People I believe are looking for our next President to be...

    Anyway, the statement itself:

I agree Norris seems to be the best candidate at the moment that I am aware of.

That press release is kind of sickening TBH. This man is a long way from the caliber of Mary Robinson.

Paddy Hillery was an excellent President
Just wasn't as high profile as others so he gets overlooked or others think he was doing nothing

As for Sean Gallagher. This boosts the profile and even when he gets nowhere with this, he'll pick more speaking engagements. Clever, don't you think

just a quick vote for the people who havwe commented so far. How many of you have actually met the man in person?

I have anyway, and I would feel being a good reader of people, he is not on any EGO trip and is a genuine candidate a much if not better than anyone else. He is a very positive man, exactly what we need.

He is an ideas man, and I think he might do a good job and actuallly do something at the posititon. Correct me if im wrong but not much has been done with rhis position since mary robinsons day.

Ofcourse being a 'bogger' most dubs just wont get him

best of luck! you will get my vote.

What does it matter if we have met him or not? Should I primarily vote for people I have met? Most people can come across as at least bearable in a face to face conversation. Doesn't mean they would all make good presidents...

I'd assume he is a genuine candidate since he is running. Positive does not equal good and neither does the slogan, I'd love to create some jobs to help people, wouldn't it be great. Sure, I'd love to create some jobs, can I get your vote?

Its not a bogger thing. I'm not from Dublin and I wouldn't vote for him if he paid me to.

Noone is running for this position yet. You can only run if you get the nomination of 4 County Councils or 20 TDs and Senators

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Has anyone received the required nominations yet? Are candidates like Sean Gallagher here just testing the water so to speak?

As of now no one is running. No one has been nominated. No one is a candidate. Realistically there will at most be 4 candidates; 1 FF, 1 FG, 1 LAB and possibly 1 independent

There is also the possibility that we might not even have an election.

I'm calling shenanigans on the "independent" FF candidate Gallagher.

I think Gallagher is a FF decoy to freeze out Norris.

Wait and see , this FFer will prevent Norris from getting in , then run a terrible campaign to allow the real FFer ( Crowley ) to get in

Why would anyone vote for a mediocre businessman with an inflated ego , because he is "on the telly"

I don't think for one minute that crowley would win with 17 years with little to show for it , but I am suspecting FF sneakiness and deception at play here with a decoy to split the independent nominations

He's trying to pull a Donald Trump; pretend to run for President while really just engaging in an act of self publicisation and ego massaging.

you would think that him... being super savvy and all.... would dump that shower of useless fks.

The only thing worse than a Fianna Fail presidential candidate is a Fianna Fail presidential candidate who pretends not to be Fianna Fail.
I hope Dustin the Turkey beats him into fifth place.
