The 3.1 Troopers are fantastic, if it's decent buy it, you won't regret it, they hold their value too, you should be able to get your money back in a year or two no bother.

What price do you think a good one is worth?

    Passenger or commercial ?
    Condition ?? Mileage ??

They're like tanks! great old machines with the 3.1 engine. I prefer the old 2.8 (previous shape very squared off ones) as they're amazingly tough but the 3.1s are a lot easier to find without huge amounts of rust (it's what killed the 2.8s, rusted away long before the mechanical bits gave up).

price varies on condition and commercial or passenger version as roverjames said. Give us an indication of the above details of you can.

Easily available in the low thousands though, still loads of them around

She's a long wheel based machine.
    Heated Seats, air con etc....

Just wondering what people think? Dont want to buy something thats a money pit.

What MPG should I expect? Anyone here drive one? General opionions? Are the good off road/ for towing?

I have a 95 Trooper 3.1 SWB commercial for the last 3 years. Ex jap import, very high spec (heated recaro seats etc and even has wipers on the headlights - very useful ??!! ). I use it mainly for towing a car transporter trailor. Very reliable (can leave it parked for months and still starts instantly), and has tons of power ... it will pull anything !

Two downsides. It drinks diesel, about 80-100 euro to tow trailor to Dublin and back. Doesn't matter too much to me because it's earning money when it's in use. However, I wouldn't be using it for a trip to town to collect parts!

Second issue - I find the steering a bit vague, especially when making minor direction changes, for example, changing lanes on a motorway. We adjusted the slack in the steering box but it's still a bit of a headache. Maybe it's just mine but I'd expect something with rack-and-pinion steering would be more controlled.

Overall I'd rate it as a value-for-money workhorse.

    Thanks,
What I'm really trying to find outt is should I go for the Landcruiser?

It cost more, but people speak very highly of them.

    What do you people think?

    Trooper or Landcruiser?

You should never buy any big 4x4 if you're going to worry about mpg, regardless of the make.

The 3.1 troopers a very tough and generally very reliable.
Landcruisers make more money because of the cult of toyota. they're good too though, but in my opinion the troopers are a bit tougher and i'd prefer them to tow with also, but that's personal preference really i suppose.

MPG wise on either of them you'd be lucky to keep them in early 30s, it'll be 20s if towing anything fairly heavy like a car.
They're (all the big 4x4s of that age/price bracket) HEAVY, have the aerodynamics of a brick and very power sapping transmissions.

oh and yes, troopers are good for off road and towing.
