HDMI with no HDMI connection?

I spent a couple of hours yesterday with an elderly couple who after buying 2 brand new 32" sets from a well known retailer. Cabled a dish and 3 runs for 2 HD receivers. Took both Akura sets out of their boxes and went to plug in the HDMI cable, the connection doesn't exist. Checked again on both sets and found a DVI socket. This set is "Full HD ready 1080p" but as far as I'm aware DVI has no audio component and does not HDCP handshake with other "HD" devices. Is that right? Secondly why are these sets being sold let alone marketed as "Full HD ready 1080p"? Confusing but is there a HDMI/ DVI work around and is the audio component got at supposedly via Digital audio. I have one of the sets in my workshop using a laptop DVI lead but all i get is green screen.

i seem to remember that some sets have an adapter in the box.
otherwise i would get them to send them back.

"full HD" and "HD ready" were separate logotypings, "full HD ready" would suggest its not certified as anything to me.

HDMI is the standard format although DVI can support HDCP handshaking. As you say, DVI does not support audio, though, so you would need a separate cable for that. HDMI is the proper way to go as it supports all manner of audio encoding. Sounds like the TVs are being "dumped" in the market. Return to seller?
